Topic: 2007 National Champions

Author: foosghost Original Message Posted: May 31 2007 3:00AM

I was just reading through the minutes of the ITSF GA - and ran across something that i forgot about.

Each federation needs to organize a national championships tournament where only nationals of the country can compete. This way, they can really determine who the national champions are.
If this is not possible, then we need to know by May 31st the names of the national champions (who will have been designated by their federation according to rules that must be fair to all players).

so seeing as today is May 31st, i would think it best if we wish to name national champions this year, then we better have ourselves a tournament.

We need to name:
Mens singles
Mens doubles
Womens singles
Womens doubles
there are junior and senoir spots this year as well.

The men's singles is still supposed to come from the winner of the ultimatefoos production. I'll have to touch base with them and see what is up.

Why do we care?
1. National champions earn spots at the ITSF world championships in Italy - they currently have to pay their own way there.
2. As a federation its one of the things i think we should make sure happens each year. - wouldnt it be cool to look back over the years, and see our list of national champions.

Ideas on how to make this happen:
1. have one of our member associations run it
2. have a series of events (qualifiers, finals)
3. do it by rankings

other ideas?

if we have a series of events - then we might be able to raise enough money to actually pay all or part of the way for our Naitonal Champions to go.

I think we just have to the results by September of this year, and that'll give them a month to make arrangements to get to italy. (oct 25-28) - so that gives us 4 months - sounds doable to me. B-)

it seems the itsf has moved back the date to name national champions: I've received this email from the ITSF:

To all ITSF Member federations

Your National Champions at the World Championships

There are several ways for players to qualify for the World Championships: ITSF Point Race; winners of the World Championship Series and International events; National Champions and Wild Cards.

See details on http://www.table-soccer.org/world_championships/documents/2007_how%20players%20qualify.pdf

As far as national champions are concerned, each ITSF member federation is entitled to send its national champions in the following categories:
- Open Singles and Doubles
- Women’s Singles and Doubles

Plus, new this year:
- Junior Singles and Doubles - these players can be male or female

Junior players have to be under 18 years old on December 31st, 2006; that is they must have been born in 1989 or after (players born before 1989 are not Juniors)

- Senior Singles and Doubles - these players can be male or female

Senior players have to be 50 years & over on December 31st, 2006; that is they must have been born before 1957 (players born in or after 1957 are not Seniors)

Please note that all national champions must qualify in the official national qualifying tournament in their country OR be announced by national federations by June 30th, 2007, at the latest.

When there is no qualifying event in a country, then the selection process must take place under fair and democratic sporting rules.

If you haven't sent the names of your national champions yet, please send us their names as soon as possible.

If your national qualifying event takes place after June 30th, please send us the date when it takes place and which categories of national champions will qualify in that event.

You can check the list of current qualified players and national champions on http://www.table-soccer.org/world_championships/index.php5" id="Override" target="New">http://www.table-soccer.org/world_championships/index.php5

Wild Cards

New this year at the World Championships: ITSF Regular Member federations benefit from special Wild Cards to have a second Men's Doubles and second Women’s Doubles representing their country.
ITSF Associate and Provisional Members are not entitled to these Wild Cards.

The names of these players will have to be announced by national federations by September 30th, 2007 – no late submission will be accepted after that date.

There will be no travel package for these players.

Each Regular Member federation will have to set up clear sporting rules for determining which teams will get the Wild Cards. For example, the Wild Card could go to:

- the 2nd best team in the national championships
- or the national federation’s best ranked team in the ITSF Rankings
- or its best national player and his/her doubles partner
- etc.

These rules will have to be made clear to all the members within each federation.

They will also have to be forwarded to ITSF.

So, if you are an ITSF Regular Member, please send us the rules you have implemented to select your Wild Cards and let us know their names as soon as possible.

To continue this topic, I'd like to see if we can make a national championships happen this year.

My thinking is this:
We announce we will be accepting applications to hold regional qualifiers, (within a given timeframe) and the national championships (again within a given timeframe).
We give promoters / associations a time period to reply with their applications.
We decide who gets accepted.
The events have an entry fee for the players.
The events have an entry fee for the promoters.
All fees help pay for our national champions to go to Italy and / or to travel to national championships.

Today June 20
July 1 - we announce we are accepting applications
July 21 - applications closed
July 27 - we announce accepted applications
Aug 3 to Sept 3 - qualifiers are held
weekend of sept 15th or 22nd or Oct 5th - national championships are held.
(just an fyi) Sept 26-30th Tornado World Championships are held
Oct 25-28 ITSF World Championships are held.

We hopefully want to name men's and women's singles and doubles champions - plus junior and senior singles and doubles champions.

I'll have to check with the status of the ultimatefoos promotions as we've promised them that our national men's singles champion would be determined from that - and that's fine - we can still determine everything else from our own events.

Please let me know your thoughts, or other ideas - we have to move quickly if we want to make this happen - and if we do anything this year at all, I think this should be it.

I'll post this on the public boards as well, as we want everyone's input - and if anyone knows of another board - please post - and I'll do my best to get it on there as well.

I think it might be a bit of a stretch to make this happen. Since the national champions have to pay out of their own pockets to go to Italy, I don't see there being that much interest in being national champions. I'm not against what you've suggested, I just don't think that 99% of Canadian foosball players would be inclined to fly to Italy to compete even if they did win.

We have a system set up in our constitution whereby you apply to represent Canada as the national champion, and the ITSF committee will review all applications and select someone based on their tournament finishes and their ability to represent Canada in a positive light. Even with this simple way of becoming a national champion (being named by your federation is a valid way to become a national champion)... I don't see us getting more than a couple of applicants since only the people interested in going to Italy would want to apply, and that's a small slice of the population.

I think the important part of making this happen is not the Italy thing - that's an option if our national champions want to take it.

But the important part is just having a national championships on its own. So that each year, Canada will know who are Canada's national champions. If this is a re-occuring event, then each year our players will have something to build towards, and something to talk about with players they meet - players can set goals, and get into. or at least have that in the back of their mind as they spend their time playing foos in a bar somewhere. its for something - other than just fun.

With this idea and the monies we raise from entries, the national champions might not have to pay anything out of their own pockets. Then your stateement about 99% changes - if its a paid trip, ya I think the majority of our players would travel to italy.

The whole apply to be our national champion thing - sucks - in my opinion. its a stop gap cause we didnt have time, nor the facilities to run a national championships last year. Now we at least have the time.

the dealine this year for us being able to name our national champions (if they are not determined by a tournament) is the end of this month.

Given the time we have infront of us, i think we can at least have some tournament - maybe even just one. but opting out for the option where we just accept applications (like our constitution says) is pretty sad in my opinion.

Author: Taha Reply #6 Posted: Jun 21 2007 12:33PM

That may be so. We don't have a lot of time if we are to name people. Perhaps we can ask for an extention from the ITSF we show that we are in the middle of a selection process.

I agree with other people that have said that it will be difficult to get East and West into the same tournament. The level of interest in going to Italy is really only there for a handful of people

Naming champions may be a sad way to do things, but given our relative lack of preparation for this event (I apologize for this..), I still think it's the best way. In any case it also gives us our highest chance of actually having people in Italy represent us.

Does anyone know if Mario even wants to go this year? Or Moya? I heard that she'd hung up her competitive wraps for a while

I just recieved this email from the ITSF

To all ITSF member federations

Just a reminder that by June 30th, (8 more days!!) we need one of the following:

- the names of your national champions who will compete in the World Championships in Italy on October 25-28 (see details in the email below)
- OR the date of your national qualifying championships event, if it takes place after June 30th (please indicate which categories of national champions will qualify in that event).

which is not the same message they gave at the start of the month. I've asked for an extension - showing them our schedule:

July 1 - we announce we are accepting applications
July 21 - applications closed
July 27 - we announce accepted applications
Aug 3 to Sept 3 - qualifiers are held
weekend of sept 15th or 22nd or Oct 5th - national championships are held.

so this would give us till the 27th of july to firm up our dates for the national championships.

At this point i dont care if we have 1 tournament in ottawa, where people can show up and compete to be canada's national champions - that's better than accepting applications from people that can pay. What is different than last time you might ask? now we have to the time, before we didnt.

Or if we dont want to use 1 event, then lets use a ranking system of some type. like USTSA or ITSF rankings - or get ours up and running, but then that would require having some tournaments, and hey if we're having tournaments why weren't they used as qualifiers.

The one thing i dont like about using an existing ranking system is that it was not known that the rankings would be used for this the entire time that players earned points for it. so we'd have to figure out a way to calculate points earned from a known point in the future onward - so that everyone has the same chance to earn points.

but why not just have a national championships, and avoid all this confusion?

and again, this is not about who gets to go to italy, this is naming canada's national champion - something that i beleive we should start doing every year.

just received the following response from the ITSF:

Hi Eric

That's fine.
What happens is most (if not all) federations know way ahead of time when their national championships take place (at least 6 months ahead of time, some of them even plan them 2 years ahead!), that's why it's no problem for them announcing that date now.
Just make sure you let us know as soon as the event has been scheduled.

Could you let us know which categories of national champions will qualify in that event, that is, which of the following categories will be represented in Italy:

- Open Singles and Doubles
- Women’s Singles and Doubles
- Junior Singles and Doubles
- Senior Singles and Doubles

Thank you.

In order to be able to run even 1 tournament as the National CHampionships, we need an association that would be willing to do it in the timeframe selected.

I can check with Chris/Frank.. but it would be nice if someone else stepped up to the plate too. What about the COFC?

just to make it official - (this copied from other thread: http://www.saskfoos.com/view_topic.asp?ParentID=40894&x=43&domain=VAN&searchterm= )

Taha, as the chair of the TSAC ITSF Committee (comprised of Taha Taha, Brien Loeppky, and Pierre-Oliver Garon) i think its time for the committee to offically come up with some options.

According to our constitutions, its up to the ITSF committee, to provide a list of options to the president (me), where if there are more than 2, then the president narrows it down to 2. Then I submit the 2 options to the executive for vote.

So we need options to determine how our National Team for the Tornado World Championships ITSF Team Event. (much has been discussed in this thread, so i would assume there's lots of ideas for options there).

Plus we need options to determine the competitive process for naming our National Champions - a selection process is not possible this year, as the date to enter national champions via selection process has passed according to the ITSF.

We have to tell the ITSF the date this 'naming national champions' competitive process will come to a close / result by July 27th.

We do not have to tell the ITSF anything about how we named our national team at the tornado world championships.
