Topic: Anyone have constant wrist pains? (tendinitis?)

Author: Onur Original Message Posted: Apr 6 2008 5:18PM

So since one of our singles tournaments in late January, I've had this nagging pain on the pinky side of my left wrist which has pretty much made playing foosball impossible unless I want to put up with the pain, which I do on occasion but then pay for it later. Lately though it's been getting worse. I went to the doc and he seems to think it's tendinitis and has me wearing a splint with a metal plate, but it's not really helping.

Has anyone else had something similar happen to them? It's a constant pain that doesn't go away, it hurts when I twist my wrist in a certain way, and I can't lift anything heavy with my left hand anymore. Typing is a bit of a chore now too and stretching a finger to hit a key might cause a sharp pain.

If you have had it happen, how long did it take to go away? Did you do anything special to help it heal faster? I'm getting a little frustrated, it's been just over 2 months now and it's getting worse. I've pretty much stopped playing foosball completely except for the occasional game once or twice a week.

Had something similar to my ring finger on my right hand after playing for 2 days straight in calgary. Turns out (at least for me) those little fingers on the outside supply quite a bit of the force for the shot. Didn't take long for it to go away although yours sounds more severe than mine. It comes back from time to time but not for more than a day or two.

Had a lot of problems years back when I started foos and played a lot. Was pretty similar to what you describe. Though it was my right wrist and the pain only lasted for a day or two. Back then I shot too hard (closed hand) just with my wrist. After changing to a more open hand shot the problem was solved.
Maybe try to change your technique slightly to see if it gets any better, or at least takes stress of your wrist.

Since you went to the doc already and it is not getting any better you might want to get a second opinion ;).

Good luck.

Rehab is the only thing. Start working out for starters (lots of forearm, wrist, and hand exercises out there). Also, when my wrists were really bad i bought one of these - http://www.powerballs.com/
which has helped. Eliminate the cause of the problem as well, it may be foos (or just technique, form etc.), but it could also be one of the other common aggravators out there - ie. working on a computer all day, sleeping in a bad position (this messed up my rotator cuff), or something else.

How's your finger feeling these days?

I wouldn't stop hitting balls. I would hit a rack of balls every three days.

It's funny, for 2 months I've had constant pain in my wrists and it was only getting worse. After making that post, I started doing some stretches for about 10 minutes, a few times a day. I also had a friend at work who had one of those Power Balls Jeff suggested and have been using that when sitting around doing nothing, and my wrist is doing a lot better in 2 days.

It's not 100%, there's still a very minor pain, but I don't get sharp pains for moving my wrist a certain way anymore. I'm not even using the splint anymore, other than when I sleep to avoid twisting it awkwardly while I sleep.

Going to take it easy on the wrist for another week and avoid foos to hopefully get back to 100%.

Hey Onur, could the pain in your left hand have resulted from over-rotation of your wrist when you perform a 5bar hack or stick pass? I used to do that when I shot a pull. My stroke wasn't very fast or efficient because I had too much movement in my arm. It seemed that I almost jerked my whole body when I shot. I had tennis elbow from foosball. It hurt the tendons in my forearm and elbow even more when I fanned or miss-shot. What sucked the most was that my sloppy technique was also a huge tell for my opponents (Ahn says I still bobble my head).

Now I try to stay relaxed and motionless until I stroke, while trying to control any unnecessary motion as I go. I’m finding that the tendon inflammation has subsided. I ain't no doctor but I’m sure the jerkiness of my technique really stressed my arm.

Hope you get well soon!

Pain can also occur when you notice it. One bad habit is leaning on the rods when the ball is in play, but your not in posession of it. This puts alot of stress on your wrists, but its unbeknownst (is that a word?) until later because the mind isn't concentrating on the body, its following the game. If that makes sense....

Author: Onur Reply #10 Posted: Apr 9 2008 4:47PM

Jeff, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it is/was. I usually put a lot of my body weight leaning on the rods, especially when playing doubles and sitting in the back waiting for the ball to come to my side. After playing for 3-4 hours I get tired of standing so I just lean...

Early on when I first started playing foos I used to get pain in my wrists but it would only last for a day or so, so I wasn't too worried about it. This time the pain just hasn't gone away.

As for overextending or hacking like you say Dave, it's possible, who knows. Maybe this is my punishment for beating your brother twice and knocking him out of the tournament, which bumped me up to Amateur :) It was that night where the injury happened... I don't remember doing anything that hurt that night though, but who knows.

Hoping it goes away so I can get back to playing. I'll probably go back to the doctors in a week if it's not fully gone.

damn typos - my message should read, "Pain can also occur when you DON'T notice it".

Should I even ask which crime you're committing with the happy thought of duct tape?

Onur,

I had something that sounded pretty similar. For years it bothered me and not much seemed to work. Then I switched to one of those ergonomic keyboards for the computer (you know the ones, split in the middle so your hands come at the keys from an angle). The pain went away faster than you could dispel enough self-respect and choke back enough bile to manage to choke out the words "Rob Shin is a good foosball player".

In other words, don't look for anything immediate but if you check back with me in a couple of weeks, we can compare notes.

Tim
