Topic: Website update - looking for ideas...
I have a bit of time so I'll fix the website and will also update it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not talking about the design but instead any ideas for the way the games are entered or displayed, or the stat page. (nothing too intense please as I don't want to re-write the code but instead just add or adjust it).
So far the only thing I can think of is having a 'loser side' or 'winner side' button for entering. Is there anything else?
Note that Onur is still going to be the webmaster and this is just a simple skye update to advance the site while he's busy... I'm here to please.
Onur can you please email me the FTP info. And Peter we have to move the hosting. I know of a few very cheap hosting plans, for example, the following is $20 per year (bandwidth = 1000mb per month): http://elpex.com/order/order_step1.asp?pid=WINBUDGET
Or here's the same company for $10 a month which is half the price but only includes 200mb of bandwidth per month) http://elpex.com/order/order_step1.asp?pid=WINMINI - the only real difference between the two which will make a difference to us is the allowable bandwidth. I would think the site doesn't use much however it's best Onur check this through the control panel as I don't have access. Once he confirms please register the site with one of the two plans or other hosting company and email me the details so I can upload the updated site once it's done. I have time this week so the sooner you do this the sooner we'll have the site up and running marathons!
Forgot to mention - Onur, I remember you don't like ASP pages.. please let me know the code type and page type and I'll code any new changes in your preferred format. Note that this will be on a Windows server though... VB, Java, Perl, etc.. etc.. it doesn't really matter to me, just let me know what you'd prefer so they don't have to be re-written later down the road.
About moving the site, the current hosting expires at the end of May so if we can move it before that then that would be extremely cool. I'll wait to hear what you two think is best
It would be awesome if you created a ning site, and then built a ranking system into it (its all php based and has its own netadmin api's). so then TSAC could steal your code ( er i mean you could donate that to TSAC), so we could integrate a ranking system into the (soon to be) new main TSAC site
player graphs! that would be nice. like Richard use to have. shows players ups and downs, their progress.
Skye, if you have the time and want to re-code things, my preference would be PHP5/MySQL5. As much as I've wanted to re-code things my plate has just been too full.
Pete, I didn't know our hosting expires at the end of May, is it literally on the 31st or sooner than that? I have not moved the site to my server yet. I copied the files over but ran into some server config issues which I need to sort out. All sites I run are in PHP and I don't have ASP setup anywhere, and I'm not sure if the host I use supports the kind of database we're currently running. It sounds like Skye may have some time and be willing to look into things so if he has another server of his own I'm fine with him putting it on one of his servers. Skye, if you need FTP details for the current site email me or Pete.
Onur
I have had an offer to host the site from a player, his server supports ASP. Just double checking that with the site being in the midst of changes if that would effect his offer.
It has come to our attention that hosting services for the domain name vancouverfoosball.com (NT WEB STARTUP) is going to expire. The Expiry date of your hosting account vancouverfoosball.com is: 5/31/2008 (mm/dd/yyyy).
Peter - make sure you log into godaddy.com and renew the domain - I think you registered it there originally. On the page you pay enter "OYH3" to get a $3 discount which will bring the price down to $6.95 for another year.
Peter - hosting - yes, we can use your friends server as long as it's a Window's based server, can you have him email me the FTP info for this server and details to set up the ODBC. (there should be a control panel for that) He should know what I'm talking about. I'll need this right away or the site will go down on the 31st... also we'll have to change the DNS but I'll explain that later once the site has been uploaded.
Onur - Yes, please email me the FTP log in information.
Onur - did you check to see the site traffic on the current server in case Peter's friend's server isn't Windows based...?
Onur - PHP5 and MYSQL are typically not on Window based servers and I don't have the time to re-code each page and transfer the database as that would take at least 4-5 hours to a whole day (or more) to complete after checking for errors... no luck with me doing that. I only meant that when I make changes I would recode to your preference... If of course the new server runs PHP extensions I'll write all new pages in that.
Eric - a shared ranking system would be great however two things - the current site isn't in php, and I used Richard's ranking equation to do the calculations which means there has to be a mutual agreement to how players are ranked and I'm not getting involved in that. (when I say mutual - i'm talking between you foos administrators as I could care less what calculation is used. I simply enter it... ) If you are planning on using the same calculations then it would be easy to blend the rankings however you'd have to be on a windows server etc..
Dave - do you have a copy of the exact graph you want reproduced? I can attempt to make it live however I'm guessing it will never be pretty like the one's sir Richard made. Email or post a copy and I'll let you know if it's possible.
Skye, Onur and Peter,
Thanks in advance for working to get this done. I know all of you have other things that you'd rather be doing.
Syke, I don't have a copy of the chart that Dave is interested in (individual players ups and downs) and I'm not too keen on that one anyways. I've been on a plateau for about a decade.
But I do have a copy of another chart that I often referred to. It plotted all of the players by increasing points, left to right. It also showed the boundries of the various rankings.
I'll email it to you, Earl
And thanks again!
Skye. I just figured out that ning allows you to embed frames in your ning pages. and those frames can have a source that comes from some other site. So the ranking system can be written in whatever you like for our purposes.
check out the main page of: http://tablesoccerca.ning.com/
it contains a survey section that is actually hosted by google.
Email sent to both Skye and Shane.
Eric - maybe I'm not following 100%, you want a ranking program however I would need a lot more details on how the program is supposed to work. For example, which exact data is this pulling from? Also, what data is it pulling... and how is it calculating the ranking? Also, what data is it suppose to display... etc.. etc.. etc..
Onur - let Peter know the amount of use the present site is getting just in case the offer for hosting he received doesn't work out...
Peter - sorry, I checked the domain and it's registered till next year June 1st... I thought for some reason it was expirying this year as well. This means you only have to secure the hosting. Again, as soon as you have the hosting info, please let me know.
I've been talking to Shane, he had a server with ASP support ready to go and he's got it up there now.
http://70.68.123.213/vancouverfoosball/httpdocs/
( I hope you don't mind Shane )
I tested most of the links and they all seem fine. If anyone else wants to give it a tinker and make sure it's all working feel free. If it looks good and I hear no complaints by tomorrow I'll point the domain to the new server.
Thanks Shane!
Onur
Cool - thanks for helping Skye, Onur, Shane.
Well, that was a waste of my effort... Eric, please email the webmasters the chart etc. to have made as I'm excusing myself. If I wanted to play games I would have gone on a date with a 15 year old.
Oh grow up, first you give me attitude in the email and now this. You wasted what, 5 minutes? All you had to do was FTP to the server, download the files, FTP to your server and upload the files. Big freaking deal.
When you want to start acting your age feel free to talk to me, until then piss off. On the other hand if you're prepared to not disappear for a year at a time and have others try and clean up your mess that you call code, and then not give attitude to those who are trying to be helpful, then feel free to do so and I'll let you handle it all. I appreciate the fact that you setup the site originally but you don't have to act the way you do.
You said you wanted to build some new tools, that has nothing to do with what was done. If you want to code some tools you need a development and testing area of your own, so you would have to do your setup anyways. Shane's setup is just his own home box on a dynamic IP so it's not an ideal setup, but it was a quick thing to setup and we need to have the site off of our current host by Saturday. If you have a better solution, you're welcome to do so, and I'll leave it all in your hands and not touch your site again.

Well, I have to respond to that:
A few weeks ago I offer to fix the site which obviously soured Onur's pride - I say this because I never did receive a copy of the pages or database EVER, nor did Onur bother to answer the single question I asked regarding the problem. I continued to write and write to get the pages so I could take a look but no response nor the pages.
Then finally I met Onur in person and he says that he would fix the site but he's busy at work and why would he fix the site for free when he makes over $70 a hour at work. Onur went on to say that it really didn't matter if the site was down though because nobody uses the site anyway....But he did assure me that he would, when he had time fix the problem.
Are you as confused as I am? Here I am offering to fix the site and here's Onur saying that he'll fix it when he has time. That's called a pride wall.....
Well, I gave it another week and the site was still down. I found this situation just retarded, here I am willing to correct what ever problem there might be, but instead, Onur who's looking after the site, is not allowing it by not providing the pages or database as requested a number of times. This made it obvious that by me offering to fix the problem I was stepping on Onur's pride....
Okay, I'm use to dealing with problems and here's what my little mind came up to deal with Onur's pride: I dreamt up this posting that I'm going to upgrade the site - this was my way to get around Onur's pride, and if you read the first posting I even carefully provided an excuse for Onur saying that he was too busy and then reinforced Onur's pride by saying that he was still the 'very important webmaster'. (insert shake of head here)
*bleep*ing time waster... I don't know what Onur is writing about and I usually don't. For example, I asked for the FTP info and Onur emails me and asks if I want the FTP info...... and of course, I never did receive the correct FTP information, I never did access any pages nor upload or download anything, so again, I have no clue what Onur is talking about. My comment on time wasting is with regards to trying to get past Onur's pride and nothing more.
Onur you commented on my code so I would appreciate if you could please post the section that is incorrectly written here - excluding the functions, please post any incorrect sections. I found this comment to be totally wild since you don't know the difference between server types, your track record of not being able to keep a site up and running, and that you hate ASP pages. This ASP comment was most profound because ASP pages are only pages made up VB, JAVA, SQL and HTML for the most part.... it's unimaginable that a real programmer would dislike any of those extremely standard languages...
And the icing on the cake for me is... the problem was never the code, instead, the error was a server error and nothing to do with the site! - but then Onur you knew that weeks ago right?
- oh, and what do you care if I'm not around - I was NOT in charge and did NOT have access to the site when I left so what's the difference.
Onur - here's the most used coded page within the site according to the original stats. Can you please show us where the mess in my code is? I say this earnestly because I'm still learning how to code - it really would be nice to have a professional such as yourself explain to us how I can improve my technique. For your convenience here's a copy of the page: (please teach us)
http://studytoday.com/junk/singles.asp Note that I posted the above in an ASP page however it only contains HTML code - just a thought.

I'm not about to get into a pissing match back and forth, we already have 1 on these boards and that's enough drama. I'll just say this and then I'm done talking to you.
You have the FTP server login, you could have gotten that yourself any time by asking Pete who I imagine you've worked with in the past, so you know it's not my site. When Pete gave me the ok to pass that info along and you asked for the login, I gave it to you.
Pete phoned me the other night checking if the site was on another server yet, and posted saying tomorrow is our last day of hosting, so it seemed urgent enough to find a server to get it into. I had no idea how long you were planning on taking to set things up, and you were asking irrelevant questions and taking your time with doing things. Shane volunteered to help, I gave him the same info I gave you, and he had the site up and running almost instantly.
As for the rest of your comments, for those who know me, I'd like to think they know I'm better than that. I was the one that approached Pete to work on the site on my own spare time, however as I'm sure everyone would agree, work life has to come before spending hours of your own time building a new site for free. I've spent hours going through the database and code fixing random things that broke with point calculations, I've spent hours with the hosting support company restoring our database from the backups and trying to get the site fixed. Ever since you started posting again I've always said if you have the spare time and want to do everything and take over again that's fine, it's one less thing I have to worry about and that offer still stands.
Onur

not true - I never received the pages or working access for the site ever.... but I'm now more interested in your teachings. This isn't a pissing contest since I'm only here to learn. You're the professional so please back up and explain what exact part of my code is poorly written? (I've included a sample page on the above link)
I do want to learn how to code correctly and this a great opportunity for me. Please, while reframing from asking someone else, will you please explain to us all, how I can improve? For example, how can I improve the sample code I've posted on that link without slowing it down? I did see a way to shorten it and that might be considered as an improvement however I'm most curious in your teachings. I'm never too old or too proud to learn so please explain.

First of all I would like to thank all those that have invested time and effort into the site. Without the combined effort of all of you the site would be non-existant. The current site has been molded by a handful of people and each of them has contributed greatly.
Many regular tournament foosball players may not use the site for other than tracking/entering their points. but the site (even though mostly static) does provide an important function. Any player coming to Vancouver or starting to play can do a simple search and have loads of info at their fingertips with a link to our forum where they can post specific queries. For those that love foosball, knowing that they can help new players explore the game does bring some rewards.
In a nutshell I would prefer that the site stay up and functioning but without volunteers that is not possible.
Onur come on, where's the code class?.. should be pretty easy as I wrote that not thinking it would be under review... come on, where's the code class? If you are going to say nasty comments then back up what you say. yup.. just talk... I'm so tired of talkers like you that walk around and pretend, talking shit that you are all that and a bag of chips... I don't mind criticism if it's coming from someone with merit and actual ability but I can't take it from a talker... your track record has only proved that you are a talker... talk, talk... talk some more... I make $72 an hour... talk talk.. I'm a programmer... talk talk... well, you know what I hear, just a bunch of talking.
And Peter you're correct, you do need volunteers and not volunteer-blockers which is similar to a kock-blocker and we all hate them.. (c of course) Maybe Onur will grow up in time and not worry who does what... Onur the blocker liked to play soccer next to his locker holding a walker, when a girl screammed "HE THE STALKER"... no no, my name is Onur and I'm just a talker...
You'll get more than that before long... concentrate on the ladies in the meantime.
Hey, where did the link to the chart go?
Jeff, as we discussed last night if there's any interest I'm looking for another coder since I have more than I can handle these days. It's contract work, so it's on your own time schedule. Just shoot me an email and we can work something out.
Onur
see - just more talk.. talk, talk, talk from Onur...
You know, you remind me of a lady I met in the bar back in around 2000, and not because of your girlish figure. This lady introducing herself handed me her business card which said she was a "Software Analyst. I thought wow... I then asked her what kind of software analyst she was... and you know what she said?... she said, "I use Word and Excel".. Surprised by the answer, I asked her for more details and she replied, "I use, and help staff use Word and Excel.".. :o/... our society is all about the title and talking I guess. I do think it's great to talk as everyone likes to hear from people that can achieve but only if you can back it up otherwise it's just talk.
Anyway, in case you are missing the point - just because you use software to make websites and change the odd bit of code doesn't make you a programmer... it just makes you a person that can use Word or Excel...
And Johnny-boy, here's a copy of that graph: http://www.studytoday.com/junk/DblsGraph.gif
Onur, since you are in charge and still haven't even made one page yet - please reproduce the graph on the above link but make it live for the website. You say you are busy however this would take less than 1 maybe at longest 2 hours. Just write a quick Java applet and don't forget details like the blur background behind the fonts.
I wasn't going to reply, but for someone accusing me of being all talk, you seem to do a lot of it yourself. Great story though, makes for a good laugh.
Onur
You didn't just reply - that's not a reply, instead it's just more talk.
Don't even compare yourself with me - I might be unconventional however I do what I say and always get things done.... and you, you are just a talker.. that's an incomparable difference!
I suppose the point that you are just a talker is crystal clear and by continuing I'm just wasting my time. Actually you've wasted my time from the start by putting up your pride wall and stopping me from fixing the site.
I won't be visiting this thread in the future as you've had ample opportunity to back up your talk... didn't happen - didn't think so... just remember that it's not that you didn't want to back up what you said, it's that you are just a talker so you can't.
and yes, yes, I know, I'll always be ugly and because you can change your talking ways, I lose right... well, hopefully I will..
So I promised Pete and a few others that I wouldn't say anything else (sorry guys), but this is more for my own knowledge since I'm not exactly familiar with your work. I don't question whether or not you know how to code, obviously you must know something to have built the site we have now, good for you. From what I've heard while at the Soho, you were one of many who took advantage of the dot com boom back in the day and it seems you've done well for yourself since then. I bet that lady in your last story was just another one of the lucky ones. I wish I could have been old enough around that time to have taken advantage of the boom as well, but I was still in highschool at the time unfortunately. I'm currently just a meager 24 years old, just a baby, so I'm still relatively new to the real world with not nearly as much experience as you.
The next little bit is going to sound like I'm tooting my own horn, or "talk" as Skye says, but I'm pretty damn proud of what I did. My personal biggest accomplishment was during the 2 years I worked at IGN Entertainment (Most hardcore gamers will recognize the company) as the Senior Producer and Developer. (www.ign.com, owned by News Corp) IGN owns some other non-gaming related sites which I helped work on, including AskMen, Rotten Tomatoes, Fileplanet (somewhat gaming related), and many others. The newest design of the entire IGN Vault Network, as well as Gamespy Planet network was built from the ground up by myself, and eventually of a team of 3 other developers which I managed. The networks back in the day used static HTML files, which was way behind the times compared to other competing networks. I coded both the front end as well as the back end which was a CMS (Content Management System in case you're not familiar with acronym) to manage all aspects of the network, including a template driven dynamic database, a dynamic mapping system, a dynamic talent calculator for games such as World of Warcraft (Which Blizzard actually asked permission to use on their own site which they do to this day as far as I'm aware), and pretty much anything and everything else you see on the network. There is no aspect of the site that can't be managed through an admin panel. There are over 100 different sites on the networks using my CMS, as well as 1000+ fan-made hosted sites using the hosting services provided by the network. Prior to when I quit, on average the Planet and Vault Network received upwards of 3 million page views a day, not including their forums or any of their main console sites. The biggest VN sites were Neverwinter Vault ( nwvault.ign.com ), World of Warcraft Vault (wowvault.ign.com) and Final Fantasy Vault (ffvault.ign.com, which I personally managed myself as well, being a big Final Fantasy fan), where the 3 alone were doing over 1 million page views combined.
Another small project I've done in my spare time is BC's largest fish-hobbyist site/forum which I built. http://bcaquaria.com I've neglected it lately unfortunately as I've been too busy and had to tear down all my fish tanks, but I used to have around 10 fish tanks of my own which got me into the hobby. There's nothing too fancy here, just some basic information and forums with a lot of mod customization, but it's fairly active these days.
I'd love to see some of your work, feel free to pick your favorite. A link would be nice, maybe someone will recognize one.
Onur
Well i guess it was pride after all joke joke
Thanks for clearing that up Onur, you have just confirmed exactly what I've been saying the whole time...
And since you still don't obviously understand - I'm not in competition with you and never have been. Actually, I didn't even know who you were, I just figured by the postings that someone named 'Onur' had the keys to the site. My sole motive was to get access to correct whatever problem existed and nothing more.
Okay, this is a wrap - just make sure you add a 'losers' and 'winners' button on both the singles and doubles game entering pages. Also, make sure you make the live chart requested by Eric and Dave etc.. It will be a nice addition and since you are in charge we trust that you will do a good job.
You've had access to the site this entire time, you even complained that you "wasted" your time. If you never had access to the site, how have you wasted any time? You just keep opening your noise hole attacking me and and aren't doing anything about it. You're saying you're not in a competition but you've been accusing me of not being a coder and asking what I've done, so I told you what I've done and now you have nothing to say in return. I've been telling you all along, if you want to fix the site, fix it.
It wasn't necessary for you to go and bring this out in public, telling everyone what I charge for contract work. Now whenever I go to the Soho people are going to bring that up and it puts me in an awkward position. It had already started on Friday with multiple people bringing up how much I make, so it made for an awkward night to the point where I didn't want to even be there to play. I'm not blaming the guys who brought it up, but they didn't need to know that information. Foosball to me is about having fun and being able to unwind after work while not having to worry about general BS, it's not supposed to be personal and I've done my best to avoid all the conflict and drama there every week up until now. I can see why a lot of people have stopped playing completely at the Soho, it just seems to bring the worst out in people.
Anyways, I'd like to consider this discussion closed yet again, and will do my best to ignore your comments.
Onur

wow, you are either really dumb or just pretending.... would someone check for blond roots... After all this you write:
"You've had access to the site this entire time, you even complained that you "wasted your time.".
I can't believe you just wrote that... you are either border-line retarded or pretending to look non-involved. Okay, here's point form, concentrate will you:
1. I have NOT had access to the site for over a year now! nope not once! That's correct, I've asked for the pages, I've asked for the database, I've asked for the log in information. And received NOTHING!!!! It's true that yesterday or the night before after all of this, you emailed it over but too little too late and besides, that was after the site had been moved! I suppose the point is, if you truly thought I had access to the site all of this time as you say, you wouldn't have emailed me the log-in details!
2. Regarding wasting my time - understand will you, the time wasted I'm referring to was the time I spent dealing with you trying to get the pages, database and / or access to the site! duh...
3. And this again is not a competition, and that's why I didn't provide a junior high school list of things in reply.
It's true that I'm not a programmer and I don't make websites for a living and I never have. I do, and have done a bit of programming that produced dollars vs. viewers and because you commented on how poor my code was, I wanted you to explain - the same person that couldn't keep the site up nor would allow others to access. This has nothing to do with your lifetime website building achievements and I've never asked for such a reply.
If we are to be technical, you still haven't backed up your talk. I'm still wondering what part of the code is poorly written? Was it the part that UltraDev software wrote which is pretty perfect I think... or the 2-3 pages of hand code that I wrote? And if it is those 2-3 pages, where exactly is the mess? I'm always open to learning and since you talk, talk, talk... let's hear the wisdom of why these pages of code aren't up to standard?
4. I stopped going downtown because of poor sportsmanship... not because of players yelling but instead because players are made to feel like they are part of the special Olympics team if they aren't batting 1000 or if their motives for playing isn't to hardcore compete. And I stopped offering help with the website because of zero involvement and listen carefully, "I didn't have access to it."....
In closing make sure you make those changes to the site.
Onur I'm just curious, why did u not give Skye any access to the site? If u did why did it take so long?
And how where do we stand now on the site because i've noticed the doubles points don't calculate and i had to come through to the message board via the other way, google.ca search vancouver foosball message board... and im sure there are other few kinks.
I didn't give him access because it wasn't my site and I'm not going to hand out a password to someone I don't know. When Pete said it was ok for him to have access and he asked, I gave it to him.
As for the points, use the link I mentioned above for now which is Shane's server when entering points. The vancouverfoosball.com domain is pointing to the old server which we don't want to update. The domain should be pointing to the new location soon.
http://70.68.123.213/vancouverfoosball/httpdocs/
I haven't tested it yet but I imagine entering points on there should work without problems.
