Topic: Use Netfoos.com?

Author: van_can_foos Original Message Posted: Feb 25 2009 2:21PM

I just thought I'd ask those who are interested to look at the free ranking and bracket software on the Netfoos site (you'll need to register to look at the specific stats):
http://www.netfoos.com/locations.shtml

As you can see Edmonton and Ottawa currently use that system. Do any of you think we could make it work for us here?

There may be an oppurtunity to use the same points across Canada if enough regions agree. Will S and Jeff T post some interesting ideas in this regard on the TSAC board here:

Any thoughts?

Netfoos looks really great and i would love to run our local stuff out of It. Our site is fine as it is now too.

Don't care too much for this tablesoccerning shit though. never knew anyone went on it.

Wow, I didn't realize that so much has happened on the tablesoccerning sight. Jeff Tung is the Ontario Rep or president now. WTF buddy!! Congrats. Who nominated Eric Dunn for president and the BC rep this go around?

I don't see why we couldn't use netfoos for a trial run. Just enter the tournaments into both databases and then go from there. If it turns out its better, then keep with it, if not, then at least we know.

Pff, that's the kind of idea I'd expect for someone that tests software for a living! Migrate fully, delete the old database and burn the server thats hosting it.

I tried creating a points database for Vancouver. After creating it I noticed that NetFoos does not support ELO yet. It is simply a placeholder for points and does not actually calculate any points after tournament results.

Another thing I've noticed is that it only has one points ranking i.e. no separation of doubles and single points.

Until NetFoos supports ELO, it would not be ideal to use it.

It doesn't support ELO? Wierd - according to Will on the tsac ning site he was saying that it does.

I searched around on the NetFoos forums and it looks as though it used to be option turned on by the admin:

So, maybe if its not working now, an email or post in their forum to the admin could get it activated.

hey guys, I run the edmonton netfoos league. If you guys are interested you could send me in your results/brackets and I will enter them into netfoos. For now I could just create a seperate account for vancouver foosball instead of putting them under the same system as I suggested on the tablesoccerca.ning.com forum.

A few things to keep in mind... Netfoos works really well for what it is meant to do, but it is hard to make it adapt to a different system. If you do either single or double elimination charts it will work fine.

The points are based off Elo, And that is really good for being easy to use and accurate, however if you handicap matches then it isn’t going to be accurate. I know right now you guys use that format, where lower ranked players are spotted points in games, it won’t work with the Elo system. That said you can just add in your own local point system to netfoos if you would like, although it is harder than using Elo.

Also, the way we do it is good for beginners and makes it easy to use Elo.

The first two weeks we had open doubles, and beginner doubles, running at the same time. It is really easy to coordinate multiple events on netfoos too, as it reduces the conflicts for you. Everyone that comes pays $5 entry, and gets in to open doubles. We draw up that bracket, and it is BYP. We have had about 20 people both times. The payouts go like this: 50% to 1st place, 25% to second place, 25% to highest team with 1 beginner player. All of the beginner players also get entered into the Beginner doubles for free. The bar we play at added in a $25 bar tab for our tournament, so that is the prize for winning beginner doubles. So far pretty much everyone has played about the same amount of games which is good. In the two weeks, pro/expert players have made about 65% of the total money paid out, so the beginners aren’t too far out for that either.

This week we are doing a Pro-Am draw based off our points. If 20 people come again, the 10 with the most points will all draw one person from the 10 people with the least points. The payout will be even to beginners and experts, and also everyone has a chance to win. I think most of the reason to handicap games can be resolved in the ways that we are doing here.

To sum this up, for the last year or so I had worked really hard to get people out to foosball nights, and we had an average of about 6-8 guys. Once I went with this format and promoted it a little bit, we had 18 people at the first night, 21 last time, and we expect a similar turnout from now on.

If at some point we could get all of the weekly tournaments in Canada to run a similar format, we could keep points on the same netfoos account. I think it would be cool to do this. The benefits would be:
1. You have an official rank in all of Canada for foosball, like “I’m top 10 in Canada”
2. We could use the system to rank larger tournaments too, and already have an existing player database to use for it.
3. If anyone travels between cities they would have points in all of the cities that run the same system. Lets say I come to Vancouver to play, I would be easily ranked in your system.
4. You could figure out which city had the best foosers.
5. Netfoos keeps track of everyones stats for all of there career. If you look at the south florida foosball netfoos account, you can see that some guys have head to head records with over 200 games played against eachother. It shows your money earned all time in foosball etc.

Let me know what you guys think.

Oh and it definately uses Elo to calculate points. That is what I have used for the last 2 tournaments in edmonton.

Author: Tongue180 Reply #9 Posted: Feb 26 2009 3:07PM

Does it let you change the ELO formula it uses?

Author: Will Reply #10 Posted: Feb 26 2009 3:19PM

It lets you make slight modifications. Mark, the guy that runs netfoos, is very helpful and makes mods for things to help people too. He has made a few extra brackets for other tournament formats and change the modules for multitourney events etc.

Nelson, email me with questions if you want to experiment with it more, i can show you how to use the elo system. will_stranks@hotmail.com

Nelson you have mail.

Author: Will Reply #12 Posted: Feb 26 2009 8:43PM

Once you log in as an admin you have to click on admin modules then Elo points updater. It generates a list of all the players in the database with updated points.

Another issue would be the rankings we use to handicap and the "overlapping" over rankings.

Author: Red Pepper Reply #14 Posted: Feb 27 2009 12:01PM

I would rather play Brad and Humberto to 5 than 8. Just my personal preference. That battle is not worth 0 points or whatever it was. Somethings gotta give...
