HUGE TURNOUT LAST NIGHT!!!!!
We played goalie wars, bank shots only.
Surprisingly not a bad game - rather entertaining.

can we replace the 3 bars too?

I'm not going to replace the 3 rods until they don't get screwed from bending. Why replace with an inferior product... it hasn't seemed detrimental to Craig's or Jeff's game considering their results recently on tour. I'll monitor for a while but most people in the US are looking to find the rods that we are currently using. Sometimes an upgrade is not really an upgrade - I still think that a 15 year old table is a better deal than a new one if you don't factor in the new men and bearings.

There is nothing wrong with the current 3 bars - why would they be replaced? I've played in the past on tables that had soft rods that were constantly bent - what good reason would there be to put those onto a table so we can go back to straightening rods between every game?

I heard a great deal of commentary about how dramatically different the tables on tour are now with all the changes. As I stated before, I doubted it was that big of a difference but I was willing to take people's word for it to some degree.

However, now that Pete has made some of the modifications, the tables are essentially the same. The balls are a little bit heavier which makes them a little slower. They are also a bit grippier but I suspect this grippiness will dissipate as the balls age. The side walls are kind of annoying for a slow pass but that can be quickly dealt with by bumping the ball towards the wall a little bit faster. In general, to deal with these changes requires a few minor adjustments that a player should be able to make in a few games.

The current handles are also fine although I have heard that the new ones are smaller. That said, I suspect adjusting to the size difference will not be that big of a deal either.

The reality is that tables on tour change all the time. They have changed from tournament to tournament for 15 years and I expect this will continue in the future. Adjusting to different playing characteristics is a big part of being able to compete on tour. Complaining that the tables aren't current or that the playing characteristics aren't the same as a brand new table does not help you to adjust to those differences. If anything, all it does is set you up for a mental excuse or rationalization that "the table is to blame"; an excuse that is too easily trotted out on those nights when you aren't playing your best.

Blaming the table will not help you to win when you are not playing well. The one thing that always impressed me about Mitch and the reason that Mitch was always the best in the city was he won even on the nights when he wasn't playing well. He found a way to win. However, if you would rather blame something else when you are struggling, that's your choice. Mitch wouldn't.

I had to use the plastic handles on the Warrior. They suck, and I think everyone used a wrap at least on the 3 (some guys went bare on the 5, but I couldn't on these). That's their adjustment, they adjust to the tables, the tables will never adjust to every player.

This was the first tournament that I can think of that I didn't blame the tables or balls and just accepted them as is, I just adjusted cause I had to, and I think I played better for it. Blaming tables is just a huge mental block that just holds you back.

i agree that blaming tables is weak . i can play on any table under any conditions, but that doesnt mean that i will play on a table that is not up to par if i dont have to. if i used a wrap i would never comlain about the handles, id just wrap them. but since i dont use wraps. to me the diffence is actually a big deal. so if that is too hard to comprehend then so be it. i just dont feel like putting in the hours of practice until the new handles are put on. everyone has their own choice to do whatever they want. i will never be convinced otherwise.

im not too concerned about the rods, in a perfect world i would like them to be new too. but for now its just the handles the bother me.

Author: Red Pepper Reply #11 Posted: Jul 7 2009 5:49PM

I agree with you Robbie on the handles if you don't use a wrap. But that is why almost every other player uses a wrap on the 3 row. It's just too hard to not use one, but if you learn to use a wrap you never have to adjust because the wrap always feels the same (apart from the tackiness/wear that erodes over time).

i tried a wrap when i had my table and it was worse for me, i tried the tube and same results, i like the feel of just the handle. kinda like why golfers take off their gloves before a put. i dont tell others to use no wrap. i tell them they should, its just not for me.

No worries, I'm going to order a new table later this week. Thanks.
