lol

Ahn, Eric and Fred all in the same quarter of the semi draw.
Reminds me of the time at Worlds 88 I think. I play Mitch in Open singles with Joey awaiting the winner.

Author: S. Edwards Reply #2 Posted: Mar 4 2010 11:08PM

Wow, only 10 entries in vifa mens singles. The year I played in it 2004 there were close to 135 entries.

Author: .Garry Reply #3 Posted: Mar 5 2010 12:15AM

37 actually, but still down dramatically.

Author: Will Reply #4 Posted: Mar 5 2010 12:51PM

Funny side note to semi singles.

Eric goodman is about to play robin Adcock...

Last year in Vegas robin beat matt Botros in the semi final on meat ball. He hit a slingshot to win. Robin plays a ridiculous game composed of slop and rinky dink shots from every rod, seriously even goalie hacks.

I played robin at worlds in the singles qualifier and he beat me meat ball... With a slingshot from the 2 bar. It is frustrating, but at least eric knows what is coming, he watched both of those games.

Matt plays jeff Allan in semi singles, matt beat jeff in open singles at worlds to move from 17th up to 13th. Wonder who is going to win this one.

Author: Will Reply #5 Posted: Mar 5 2010 3:30PM

Matt beat jeff, might be Eric vs matt to win that half of the bracket...

Author: Aged Whine & Cheese Reply #6 Posted: Mar 5 2010 4:39PM

I notice that Hans Friedrich Kucher is still playing in Semi singles. I played that guy in semi-doubles 15+ years ago. Why is he still a semi? If he keeps winning, he will meet Jeff Allen.

If I were still a semi, I wouldn't attend tournaments out of sheer embarrassment. Now I don't attend tournaments because there aren't enough events for pros. Well, there is that and the fact that I suck.

Author: Aged Whine & Cheese Reply #7 Posted: Mar 5 2010 4:43PM

Vancouver's [dis]own[ed] Johnny Borbely took 3rd in the No Poor DYP. That's a pretty good showing. Congrats.

Author: Will Reply #8 Posted: Mar 6 2010 12:21PM

Also David vick is a semi pro somehow... This guy was a pro master and then stopped playing for a few years, came back and started winning everything. The only reason he hasn't been bumped yet is because his partner in semi is Ed Geer (the guy who controls what rank players are).

At the runaway bay tournament about a month ago he came 2nd in open singles, ahead of Tommy adkisson and Brandon Moreland. He also won semi doubles and singles. I would be a little upset about playing him in semipro.

The new venue is nicer, but the tables suck this year. Problems with: veneer, rods, man too low so ball roofing, etc.

Dave struggled with roofing for a while but then figured it out and went deep into Open Dubs beating Ron Olson and Dan Barber (I hate that guy), and then pushing Tracy and Dave to 5th game. Dave had it on his rod to win but Tracy baited him and then took it away. Dave got it and then scored to win. On the losers side, Dave made Tony switch from Tic Tac to stopped ball pass and forced them to put Tony in the back for Dave's serve. I think they got a game against Tony but not totally sure.

A lot of people were really impressed with Dave's game and Phil Parros really played well with him as well.

I had 4 meat balls yesterday and lost on 3 of them (F#$K). Kathy Brainard and I pushed Tiffany Moore and Dusty Bambenek to meat ball and had them sweating.

Eric Goodman destroyed me in one event and then I met him in Open Dubs qualifier and played a little better pushing him to a final game. I hate you Eric (just kidding).

My phone is not working too well. So, Tuano call me to tell me what you want me to buy you. Harrahs: 702 369 5000 ask for Dennis Jiang's room. Dennis has a fireball table in his room and is quietly showing it to anyone interested.

Johnny's back pin on the Fireball is lights out. LOTS of people loving the table.

Jim Stevens asked me to do some color on some matches.
I have studied a lot of what Tim did and I figure if I do the exact opposite I should be good to go...

Hope everyone is well. 90% sure this will be my last major.

Fred

So they finally let you play women's doubles?

Too bad it will be your last major Freddy. I figure, in two years, I'll go to another one so I can play Senior events against people I remember.

Botros and Goodman playing for King seat in Semi doubles! Go Guys!

Author: .Garry Reply #12 Posted: Mar 7 2010 5:04PM

It look like they are playing Vick--the promaster...lol- and Ed Geer- the person who controls the rankings-go figure.

Botros took out Goodman for 3rd or better in semi singles- great showing by both!!!

Where did Linda end up in womens singles? From what the charts show.... Wow! It blanks out near the end of the chart but good job even if you lost the next game Linda!

Author: Will Reply #16 Posted: Mar 8 2010 5:59PM

Good job Eric and matt also! Matt with 3rd in semi singles, Eric with 4th in semi singles, and together finishing 3rd in semi doubs.

Des finished pretty high in am doubs also.

Botros and Darryl did really well in open doubles, as did jeff Allan playing with steve Mori. Dave Ahn and phil perros also did well in open doubles. Good job everyone way to represent Canada!

Author: Will Reply #17 Posted: Mar 8 2010 6:00PM

Has anyone reading this ever beat Robin Adcock? The guy just keeps beating Albertans...

Author: The Next One. Reply #18 Posted: Mar 8 2010 6:43PM

Just want to congradulate Eric Dunn on another top 10 in Open Doubles...(you'll get your top 5 in the next year or so I hope)

Matt and Eric Goodman played very well, they tore up the semi division..Matt and Darryl i heard about your forfeit in doubles, total BS!! And last I checked Todd and Darryl were still in the running for tops in Pro Am NOT BAD for a guy with no practice. Canada is seriously representing with new talent, Im predicting in the next 5 years, the Pro Division will be dominated by Canadians.

Brian, don't get mad, I was seriously dissapointed with your stamina, you know what i mean lol. Ya those tables are definately shit, and I agree totally not to buy them.

Darryl, just want to say Thank You very much for helping me with my roller. Dave Gummeson spent 30 mins with me after trying to help me too.

OUR BOYS
Jeff 13th Open Doubles with Steve Mori..WOW!!

Johnny 2/3 In DYP, he played sweet ass..haha, He bricked me in that event and made more money than me this weekend.

I didnt place in anything this go around
7th am singles..what a joke
7th semipro doubles...Tommie was GREAT!!
17th Open doubles..Phil played like a pro master.

TOTAL CASH WINNINGS $60 haha what a joke.

The real joke was the Tables, Roofed everything, I never make excuses but my lack luster performance was 100% due to this. They recalled 8-12 tables from the room according to Charles because they were so bad. Dave Gummeson saw me roof 8 out of 10 shots on a empty net, men up, push sides pull sides middles, everything. The only time I could shoot how i shoot was on the Pit tables, but unfortunately that was against Gummy/Tac and Tony Spre/Emelio.

I'm going to start heavily supporting the Warrior Tours now after this, Forget Tornado, until they fix this problem. They got so much feedback about these tables in Dallas, and did absolutely nothing. I let Dave Courington have it. It took too much energy out of me. I didn't even enter Open Singles, because of the insane amounts of matches that i had to play..If the tables were playing normal, I would have for sure. All I heard this weekend was WHY DID THEY START FICKING WITH THE TABLES IN THE BEGINNING?

I agree.

Author: Aged Whine & Cheese Reply #20 Posted: Mar 8 2010 9:05PM

"WHY DID THEY START FICKING WITH THE TABLES IN THE BEGINNING?"

I suspect the answer, which they will never admit, is they were trying to nickel and dime the costs down to save a few pennies on each table built. That's usually why companies screw with/up a good thing.

Author: Will Reply #21 Posted: Mar 8 2010 9:12PM

That is the reason for sure.. They admitted it when they stopped using merkel rods - just too pricey. They moved there manufacturing facility to Mexico for coin op tabes and to china for everything else.. To save money. Now they are made in Texas again but use as cheap of parts as possible, they downgraded the rods again, use cheaper plastic in the men, etc.

Can we really complain about them wanting to save costs? Not really, but having even one foosball player as QC would help quite a bit. Go Warrior and Fireball for now, at least they care about the players. There was more total money paid out at our nationals than in this entire event (not counting vifa payouts which I dint see listed)

How much money did you guys end up winning down there Eric? Cover your costs?

Author: Linda Reply #22 Posted: Mar 8 2010 11:59PM

Yeah the charts on Netfoos missing some games/matches here and there, and obviously aren't complete.

My foos game couldn't have come together at a better time. It was a great weekend overall...but i'm definitely disappointed in that i KNOW i could have gone even deeper in Women's singles with the way i was playing. I was never crushed in any given match. But really in the end, i can't complain.

Vifa Women's Singles - 4th place. Was able to avenge my A side loss to Melissa Kegg with a B side win later.

Vifa Team (w/Darrel, Eric & Tony) - 3rd place. Was fun playing with you guys! Great event...so exhausting.

No Pro Women's Singles - don't ask....major brain farts first thing in the morning on Saturday (out in 3 games...not 2 like i first thought...although it might as well have been 2 and out)

No Pro Women's Doubles - 5/6th My loss to get knocked out was played at 1:15am...brutal!

Women's Doubles - 5/6th. Won a few matches against some really good teams. Got put to the losers bracket by Deliza Baumbach & Christina Fuchs - went to 3rd game and lost 8-7. They had about 3 slops that game. Faced them again later in the Losers bracket. Went to 3rd game and lost 7-5 again with about 3 slop balls. I had my chances to win the match but couldn't close. Fuchs bricked the crap out of me.

Women's Singles - finished 5/6th. Among some others, i won my matches against Gena Murray and Stayce Fowler (such an amazing player and awesome person....so friendly!). Lost my A side match against Olga Lasecka 5-4, 5-4 (disappointed - coulda gone either way, but a win would have meant 3rd or better). Played Shelly Langley (also super friendly) in the B side and lost in 3 games (5-4, 3-5, 4-6). It was kind of funny - Shelly scored the 6th goal and promptly got right back to ready position. Got a huge compliment after when she said i killed her on the 5 bar =)

Open Mixed (w/Matt Botros) - 13/16th. Highlight...bricking Robert Mares and scoring a long pull shot from my 2 bar to win the match.

No Pro Mixed (w/Eric Goodman) - we both ran out of gas by the time the event started.

It was fun to see such amazing foos all weekend from the Canadian contingent. Getting to watch pro masters play was amazing - the open doubles final was sick! I can't say enough about alot of the women foosers i met down there. So much talent, and such a friendly bunch.

Say what u want about Tornado (and I even was put out of Open Singles because I started hitting the rod mid-match), but at least when you do a shot off the bumper the whole rod doesn't blast through the wall with the table in pieces. That actually does happen on Warrior.

I'll just do a sling shot here...and wtf...need a new table.

Will wrote: "Can we really complain about them wanting to save costs?"

Saving costs is fine to a degree. What Tornado seems to have done is to save a few pennies here and there at the expense of lousy tables that break down and need repairs. They will may make a few more dollars selling parts in the short term but eventually they destroy their brand.

It seems to me that Tornado has a myopic view here, short term cost savings at the expense of the long term viability of their product. The players and likely table operators are getting sick of the poor quality of Tornado. Competitors like Warrior and Fireball are entering the market because they sense weakness in Tornado's market dominance (which was almost complete about a decade ago). The Tornado brand is in trouble.

Author: TR Reply #25 Posted: Mar 9 2010 9:01PM

Saving costs?...... Don't think so. At the Fireball Table room the guy was talking about retailing his rods which were virtually unbendable for foosball and lightning quick for $20. The guy hung off of them with all of his body weight. They have a pic of Spree standing on one of the handles and no bend after! I think the Tornado rods are $35-40 how do you figure they're saving money? They need to go the other way not cheaper.I don't understand why they don't make a complete competition table that curbs no costs with no coin-op (not needed for tournaments) for competition only. With the best rods, best men, hand made, lifetime warranty, whatever and never change it. Charge $3000 or whatever it costs and be done with it. Just make it the absolute best competition table available and use only for competition but can be purchased as well. Make cheaper tables in the Tornado line up that make it affordable for everyone, but don't cut any costs on the Competition Table.

Author: Will Reply #26 Posted: Mar 10 2010 2:38AM

Tim and Todd... both really good points. I can't argue with anything either of you said.

Also I know the wall can blow out on a Warrior. Even with these problems mentioned about roofing the ball etc. Tornado still manufactures a better(stronger) table. Warrior is still really fun to play on though, you can do stuff on a Warrior that you cant do on a Tornado. If you take care of a Warrior it will last. You can also pull of things on a tornado that you cant on a Warrior, but they are different tables. I'm happy we have both to play on.

Someone has this signature on the foosballboard.
I play Foosball, not Tornado. I wholeheartedly agree with that. But for now, Tornado is still the best table I have ever played on.

Author: dfnder Reply #27 Posted: Mar 10 2010 3:35AM

What is sorta sad,

I would rather own a 10-15 year old tornado over a brand new one. At least you could change handles and side strips and you would have a table that lasts forever.

Author: The Next One. Reply #28 Posted: Mar 10 2010 4:44AM

Yeah, there still is no question that Tornado is the slickest table in the market,no table will be designed better. Mary even told me that they know that can't get to Tornado standards. No one is questioning that, Roofing shots and having Tornado not appreaciating the issue is the problem. Roofing goals just takes everything good about the table away, one justs forget how awesome the 2 bar shot wss hit or the pimpt 5 row pass was after they take a shot and it roofs. It's really depressing.

Author: The Next One. Reply #29 Posted: Mar 10 2010 4:54AM

Billy Pappas on this years Tornado Tables

"The biggest problem was by far the rods. Fred and I actually tested every single table in the room before we played. THEY ALL SUCKED!!!! atleast 2 rods were bent bad on all of them.

If they are going to stay like this I dont see how they can last. Actually at this point I have no idea how they are still going. Worst overall tables I ever seen... and their have been some bad ones!!! lol.

Why the hell did they change from tables in 2004-2006. They started *bleep*ing up the balls which was bad enough but now the tables??? Oh and ya the balls I think were at its worst ever aswell.

Anyways whatever. At this point warrior is probably going to be better very soon.

Wow, great tournament. Now that I've had a few days to relax and catch up on some sleep I'll give my $0.02 on the HOFC.

Turnout was awesome, one hundred fifty something entries in semi-singles... The room was always packed, which made it tough to warm up for a match. Fortunately I was playing enough matches that I never really had time to get cold.

VIFA 4man (Darrel, Linda, Tony and I)
First event of the weekend, and seriously the star of the team was Linda. Played super consistant foosball and single handedly won our match over the other Calgary team. Honorable mention to Tony for sure as he played some outstanding FSO matches. 3rd place showing was very strong. Unfortunate that we couldn't beat the team that had two 3hdcp players for the king seat. It was over before the 4 on 4 event if I remember right. Second loss came to our perennial rivals from LA Foosclub who beat us with their first goal of the 4 on 4 event. Hate losing to them but they played well and we were behind from the get go, and never quite completed the comeback. I needed to step up in GW, but struggled with my stroke the entire match.

VIFA Dubs
Matt B. and I partnered up and took 2nd place to Mike Boyle and his partner. After bricking his front pin he started hitting a tic-tac that had my number. I made a few stops but not enough. Matt struggled with hitting the bars in the final two matches otherwise I firmly believe we would have taken the title.

Semi Singles
A larger than normal field made this one alot of fun. I ran fairly easily through the winners bracket. A couple of big wins over Teddy Sprouse and Joey Smith really got my confidence up. In the WB semifinal I ran into previous champion Robin Adcock. The same guy that hit the slingshot on Matt for the win last year. I played fairly well offensively, but couldn't stop the tic-tac 3row until late in the 2nd game and down 3-1. I brought it back to 4-4 but lost against a 2row slop. Ran into Matt B in the 4th or better match, being partners in Semi-dubs at the time and deep in the bracket. I offered Matt the option to split the difference in winnings between what I made for 4th and what he made. The logic (on my side anyhow) being that:
1) A hard fought match between the two of us could leave hard feelings that would mess with out teamwork in doubles.
2) Matt matches up against Adcock better than I do
3) I was wasted tired

We played a "match" for appearances but for the most part I tried to warm up Matt for the style of play that he would see from Adcock.

Matt ended up losing in the third game to Adcock, but it was closer than my match with him.

Semi-dubs
What can I say, Matt played awesome. He scored high percentage, made pickups and played great 'off the ball' foosball. He may have struggled with the 5row more than usual, but made up for it in other areas.
I hit about 5 game balls from the 2row in this event and showed up with a defense that was pretty strong.
We lost King Seat to David Vick and Ed Geer. Ed played alright, but not overpowering. David Vick played really strong, above the level of a semipro in my eyes. Not that it wasn't competetive. It was certainly that. I think the difference in the game was my inability to clear from the 2row. We won the first game but the second two he got too many posetions from my 2row. Honestly I was so tired that I couldn't see the holes properly. I had played til 2am since Wednesday and was out of gas. I think Matt was hitting rods in this match, I can't remember too well.

In the losers bracket final we lost to Dan Federlien and Chris Lancaster. Matt and I both came out flat. We switched me up front once or twice but I couldn't make the transition. I think Matt hit a few rods in this match as well.

Open dubs qualifier (with Des)
I shot 10/10 in the first match against Britnay and her partner. He played well in the first, but c

Something that I forgot to mention... I won a T3000 table in the league banquet draw! I think with the value of that it probably put me in the top 3 money winners at the tournament.

Top 10 in open doubles?!?!? I didn't make the top 30.

Singles was 13th. Played well but lost to Billy and rob mares

highlight of the weekend for me was in my 2nd round OS match agaisnt Cory Taylor (I think). He just beat Trevor Park the match before and had me 2 games to none. And I said to myself "yea I can beat this guy 3 strait games". Totally wore him down with 2-5. 5-3. 3-bar goal. His drop. I'd get a price of his 5. Then again go 2-5 5-3 then 3-bar goal. Again and again and again. If I got the ball on any rod it would eventually end up a goal from my 3. He was so exhausted after the match.

Then I got slopped/crushed by Billy. He was cool afterwards though. Told me about a tell on my 5 he saw and offered to help me get back my stick wall pass. Then lost to
mares 6-4 in third game. Got stupid on my 2-5 game him a few too many possessions on the 3. And he slopped in the last goal from his 5

playing mixed with Tiffany Moore was fun. We didn't do well. Then she goes and wins womens singles. Man that's three awesome women I've played mixed with (Stayce fowler and Moya as well) that have shown at one time or another they're the best female fooser in the room and I can't do good in mixed with em. I suck!! B-$
mixed with them.

I think overall Canadians did well in Open, esp. Open Dubs. Can't remem how many people played, but it was alot more then in the past, maybe 150 or so.

Eric: OS - 13th, OD - 33rd
Jeff: OS - 17th, OD - 13th
Dave: OS - n/a, OD - 17th
Matt: OS - n/a,OD - 17th
Darrel: OS - n/a, OD - 17th
Moya: OS - n/a, OD - 33rd
Eric G: OS - n/a, OD - n/a

I can't find the Open Mixed results anywhere.
