I am planning to attend the Kansai open next week in Osaka while I'm in Japan. Is there anything I should know or anyone I need to contact? I know you attended before a few years back. Thanks.

Is "Lucky son of a bitch" something that Nelson needs to know or just some bitter troll posting?

What Jeff was referring to was the fact that japanese girls who play foosball are super cute especially when you're playing funsy games. And yes I enjoyed myself thoroughly playing foosball with her. I think it hurt both our wallets quite a bit.
You need to come to Japan to play foosball soon Mr Allen!

Yes, yes, I know I need do.
Still, son of a bitch.
hahaaha.
Are there results for this tourney somewhere, how did it go?

The tournament was held over two days in Osaka near the Sky Umeda building at Supporter's Field. It was a small sports bar where they brought in 3 older tornado tables (2 grey marble and 1 brown wood). They were still using the old side strips, men and I think refurbished balls.
I could not do a steep enough brush pass to save my life. I noticed that none of the players did. I think it had to do with the textures of the older balls they were using. So I basically resorted to a drag/brush series which worked quite well for whatever reason.
The bar was nice, it was cozy and the staff were very nice. There was a special menu prepared for the Kansai Open. The food was a bit lacking, you could order noodles for 700 yen and it would be basically udon (noodles) with an egg.
The setup was quite professional with video cameras and TVs hooked up so you could watch the action on the tables.
Entry fees were about 5000 yen (approximately $60 CAD) and you had to plug 200 yen per play (about $2.50 per play, yikes!). There was none of the "I own the table", everyone split the cost for games, I assumed possibly because it was so expensive or generally the politeness of Japanese people.
The tournament was very well run by the organizers (you could spot them with the official JTSF red shirts marked staff), it was round robin followed by single elimination brackets. Each group consisted of 6 players or teams. Top 8 teams or players overall would make it into the elimination brackets.
One of the players pointed out to me that the #1 and #2 ranked players in Japan showed up for the tournament. It was easier to spot them because they wore official Japanese foosball attire (all white basically). I ended up being seeded #2 overall in open singles and #3 overall in open doubles (I played with a random partner, we were both single entries) after round robin.
My partner in open singles was very nice, To summarize, he was like Tim. He did a far wall brush series with decent percentage but his 3-bar (pull shot) was inconsistent (sometimes he would miss the net completely). His forward play was much stronger than his goalie play since he could not seem to put up a proper defense so it was like forward shootout or 5-bar wars when I played forward. Sometimes he would call time out if he had the ball on his 3-bar on key balls since he seemed to lack confidence on his 3-bar.
Regrettably I only finished 3rd after the single elimination brackets in both open singles and open doubles (losing on meat ball in the semi-final by slop in both cases). I got some nice shiny trophies but no money.
The pool of players is less than in North America; however, I found that the skill level of the higher level players are quite good. Most of the better players could pass and shoot with decent proficiency. I would say that the #1-#4 or so could beat you on any given day. They had good reading ability and some of them did a 2-5 passing series as well.
Overall, the players were quite hospitable and friendly towards me. I would recommend you attend their tournaments if you happen to be in Japan when they occur. I had a good time, especially playing funsy games. However, the highlight of the tournament for me was playing funsy games with the cute Japanese girl.

Great job on combining foos with travelling - always a good combination. Also, big congratz on playing well.
Good writeup too.
