Topic: Edmonton League for the Fall

We have been planning on trying to change things up a bit this fall, mostly as a way to generate new interest in foosball but also as a way to keep the current players happy by giving the players something new. We will continue to run Tuesday Night Foos so that players still have DYP's, BYP's, Singles, etc but we will be starting a Thursday night league.

This league will be run with the following format, but there are some things that need to be discussed still before the official announcement.

Teams consist of at least 4 players - these teams can consist of any players of any/all skill levels.

Each team picks a "home table". Each table can have up to 2 teams using it as there home table.

The table can be in any location, it does not have to be a table supplied by the EFL but the table must be maintained well. The EFL offers 4 tables in Gateway, and tables in Time Out Pub, the Elephant and Castle, Beer Hunter (West End and St. Albert). Also a potential spot could be Rosario's, the NAIT bar that has tables, or anywhere else.

Every week (Thursday?) each team has a "Match" which consists of several games between the two teams. Your teams games will be evenly spread between home and away games. On home games the other team plays at your location on your table, on away games your team plays against the other team at the other teams table.

The league will be divided up into divisions based on the skill level of the team. Tier 1 will be the highest tier and will have 4 teams in it. Each team plays 4 games a month. (round robin, followed by top two teams playing a final and bottom two teams playing a final).

At the end of the month if your team wins the tier, it moves up, if your team loses the tier it moves down, and if your team is the 2nd or 3rd team it remains in the same division. The winner of the highest tier does not move up, but rather has its name added to the "Championship Trophy"

At the start of the season each team will be placed into a tier that seems most fitting based on skill level as accurately as possible.

Each match will be played using the following format:

Team A and Team B each have a "Match Card" and write the following information on the sheet before the match.
Player 1: Mike
Player 2: Matt
Player 3: John
Player 4: Fred
Doubles team 1: Mike and Fred
Doubles team 2: Matt and John
Doubles team 3: Mike and John
Doubles team 4: Matt and Fred
Overtime team: Mike and Matt

The overtime team must not be one of the same combinations as the 4 doubles teams.

Each game counts as 1 point. If there is a tie then the overtime game is played.

Some problems that have been brought up so far include:

What stops them from quitting mid season?

How do you address subs?

What if a pro wanted to sub on a lower tier team?

Also any other things that could be brought up would be excellent.

We will promote this really hard in places like colleges and universities at the start of September, and maybe try to coordinate some things with bars at those places. Also we will think about doing a radio promotion or something along those lines... It would be awesome if we could get 8-12 teams of players.

The big thing is that there are tiers, which I feel is important for growing foosball. There isn`t any other sports in which players show up as raw beginnners that don`t even know about the game at all and have to play against the best players in the city. It would be a lot easier for them to come in and compete against players in there category and then if they win there league move up to compete against better players, then if they lose that league they move back down.

Again any thoughts would be much appreciated. Who would be interested in this and would it take you away from the Tuesday night DYP`s?

Is it feesible to expect to build a league and then have people just show up, when they don't have any tournament experience?

I really like this idea and could definitely see myself participating, but have to question the practicality, for right now.

As much as I like foosball, I'm not sure I have the luxury of two nights a week to put into it. I suspect the same for most of the regulars, and that would mean we'd need to start generating more interest in the game and get new players to start filling out the rosters.

I think getting into the corporate challenge as an event, and having tournaments at The Nest would be a good start. Anywhere they already have a community built up for other team-based events could be a great venue for generating interest. (University, indoor soccer leagues, hockey arenas)

Will, Chad and Ben (and whoever else stepped up to get this league going) have done a great job forming a nucleus to start from, but to get this going they're going to need support from the rest of us in terms of having tournaments outside of gateway, or making public showings.

If you really want to get serious about increasing the player base you should probably start thinking about a business plan and see what resources or ideas you can come up with from the existing player base. I would suggest that players that have been around the game for a while (Simon, Garry, Christian) have a couple of ideas, maybe they can post them here.

Also, what's to stop the top four players in the league from forming a team and just winning the championship every time? Do we have the depth, even within the league, to have another team even challenge that?

Can we even it out so every team works on a 'cap' system, or maybe get a draft system going so that it's fair?

How would we deal with 'expansion teams?' would they get to pick from other teams, or would they need to find their own players themselves?

Just one question. Who is Fred?

seriously though, Darcy has mad a lot of valid points.

On another note,

I was talking to my son today. He is taking gym this summer at JP High School. They take them golfing, bowling, tennis, swimming, and a few other sports/games. I asked him to see if foosball would be of interest to them. A class of 20 - 30 kids go to gateway and we have a player or two there to show them the basics. Might be worth looking into. Maybe Will could put a table in the school.

I am interested in putting a team together and joining it in. We are students in Lacombe. I would have to talk to people but we have some pretty serious foosballers.
e-mail me at owen.poplawski@hotmail.com
with some more info about joining any league in my area.
we also have our own table. would that work as a home table even if it is out in Lacombe?

Simon I will need to be set up to talk to the high school, that would really be an easy way to promote the game exactly the right way.

Owen, maybe I can come and play with you guys in Lacombe some time and we can see if we can work out something. Talk about foos a bit and play some games. Would like to meet you regardless of the league status. The problem is that I don't think I could convince people to drive to Lacombe for a league night.

Do you play on Tornado tables? Is the table in a bar?
