Topic: Nov 16 Results and Points Update SUPERDOUBS!

Author: Will Original Message Posted: Nov 18 2010 8:38PM

This week we did a super doubles format, which was pretty fun.

We took the 4 teams that had the most points and had them play off in a best of 5 double elim bracket, and then had the other 7 teams play in a standard tournament.

The highest finishing 4 teams from the lower chart played against the teams in the pro tournament.

One of the reasons we came up with this format was to get more money into the hands of lower ranked players, but with the doubles format it didn't end up working out that way, although with singles we did see more am's win.

Christain and Simon won the top chart, beating Ben and I 3-1 3-1 to double dip in the final. There were a bunch of really close games including Rog and Mike against Garry and Darcy. I think it went to 5-3 in the third in a back and forth battle.

In the Am Chart the "favorite" coming in based on points (and I think probably the favorite regardless) was Chad and Paul. They were upset in the first round, but fought back into the final winning all of the B side games.

Cam was put on two teams and made his way into 1st place playing with Jamie (who was clutch the entire night) and 3rd playing with Sam.

Carlo and Brian finished 4th, and they beat Team Machine to take the $$$ for 4th.

Great playing everyone!

I would like to hear comments on this thread if possible from as many people as possible!

Do you like the "Two Tiers" where the top pro players do not play agianst the lower ranked players?

Should I think about incorporating these events, and maybe a "Super DYP" involving the top 8-12 players in one DYP and the rest in a second DYP, same format as the singles and doubles?

Should I wipe them out and go back to the normal format?

Should we do exclusively two tiered events? Or a mixture? LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK! I'll post our format for next week once we get some responses.

BEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TOP 5!

Wow, I gained a whole 2 points. Problem with the super format is it protects the top players from an upset and they don't risk losing a lot of points. Also the am's will be limited on the points they can gain. Go back and give points for the finals and see how much the am's gain. Also the winner of the Am division doesn't win any money of he loses to a pro in the final.

Hey don't complain about only gaining 2 points. Christian and I dropped about 25 last time we won an event because we lost one match too! That is the way it should be, its tough to win points when you have lots of them, embrace the challenge! Partner up with a player that has 900 points, then win the thing. When Des and I won a BYP that is what put me into first place, because it is tough to beat two pro's when you have an Am partner! Des BTW played amazing in that event, but that was just smart partner choice by me.

The $$$ thing kind of backfired. It worked well in singles, but in doubles maybe we will just eliminate the "crossover" or have it only count for the first place teams playing for the gateway bucks or something like that.

Who's complaining? I said "Wow"

I wasn't tryin to say that you were complaining, I guess it was poor word choice on my part.

Nice work Ben!

Will, i'd say this format is probably better for rookies to get play time but it will be harder for them to move up, as simon mentioned. It's also harder for guys in my position to get alot of games in. Especially being that all of the tables are in use constantly, so not alot of time for pickup games.

Maybe a DYP will be a bit different, never know until you try!

Could also look at doing just a straight DYP with everyone involved and then do the super event based on whoever is drawn together.

Just a thought.

>>>One of the reasons we came up with this format was to get more money into the hands of lower ranked players, but with the doubles format it didn't end up working out that way, although with singles we did see more am's win.<<<

I dont think singles was that successful for the AM players

In Singles - 1st (yet to be decided), 2nd was a pro player, 3rd was a pro player, 4th was an AM player

In Doubles - 1st was a pro team, 2nd was a pro team, 3rd was a pro team, 4th was an AM team

The format was fun, I just think there should be a little tweaking to get the AM players some more $$ and some more points.

I guess that is true, I still think Tobin is going to beat Christian pretty easily though!

Sam beat me 7-0, Ben and Simon both won in "overtime" essentially, so at least the games were close. In doubles it wasn't quite as hard because less slop goals go in so it makes it a little better for the pro team.

As far as not being able to gain points in the lower division, that is not true.
11-20 from before this weeks event

Humberstone, Paul 985
Myszczyszyn, Tobin 965
Tse, Desmond 930
Trynchuk, Dale 928
Rupertus, Lindsey 920
Simeon, Jamie 917
Spencer, Chad 898
Burrows, Cam 892
Kerr, Chris 883
Wilkins, Sam 883

11-20 after Cam and Jamie won:
Humberstone, Paul 996
Simeon, Jamie 976
Myszczyszyn, Tobin 965
Burrows, Cam 951
Tse, Desmond 930
Trynchuk, Dale 928
Rupertus, Lindsey 920
Spencer, Chad 909
Schnieder, Jeff 886
Smithson, Justin 882

Jamie went from 917 up to 976 and Cam went from 892 up to 951.

Paul came in second place so that is the only reason that Jamie didn't jump up into the 11th spot. Considering they both started out lower than 16th and are now in 12th and 14th place I think it is fair to assume they could move up into that top group. Also worth noting is that the top 10 has only had very small amounts of change in the last 6-8 months, so it is not like people were moving up more before we had this format.

As for the money though, I do need to change how that is paid out. From now on for SUPER events assuming we have 20 players (average)

1st Pro and Am $10
2nd Pro and Am $10
3rd Pro and Am $10
Total paid out so far is $60

If you finish in the top 3 you get your money back
Then we Play off for:
1st $ 30
2nd $ 20
3rd $ 15
You have to beat the other team to win this. Does the point spot need to be increased? Maybe start at 3 but flip for serve? It is SO hard already with the two spot, but somehow more pro's have been pulling it off.
Any more thougths?
