Topic: Tuesday Jan 25th Results and Points Update

Author: Will Original Message Posted: Jan 26 2011 12:35AM

This week we did a 2400 Limited, where each teams total points had to remain under 2400 points. While I think about it right now, I would say it is one of the all time classics of our Tuesday night tournaments!

There was great teams playing well and winning, up and coming teams pulling off big upsets, amazing shots, and games down to the wire all throughout the night.

In the first round Carlos and Brian were matched up against Garret and Christof - and got smoke 5-0 in the first game. In the second one Carlos and Brian pulled it together to win 5-1 but found themselves down 3-1 in the third. Sometimes when the going gets tough the tough get going, and that is exactly what happened. A hard fought comeback put Carlos and Brian through to the second round on the A side.

The next matchup for them was against Sam and I. Brian was a rock, and made the first 4 blocks, and scored twice early. Carlos buried a hack and two 3 bar shots and they beat us 5-3 in the first. The second game they got up again, and had a 3-2 lead - only to have Sam step up and put two in a row in from the back. After that momentum builder we got the win and took the match.

Tobin and Garry partnered up late in the afternoon, and it turned out to be a really good partnership. Garry helped keep Tobin calm and reading well - and certainly did his part in the dynamic duo.

They won the flip against Sam and I, and from that point the match was over. Tobin passed and shot 100% in the first game, literally every single time he touched the ball... well, my serve. 5-2

In the second game things went our way a little bit more, and we managed to make a total of 3 blocks in the match. That's counting 5 bar blocks too. Garry made a bunch of saves, and scored a goal or two. At 4-4 it was Tobins serve - and he continued to take care of business with a steep fast downhill brush, set up and waited a solid 12-13 seconds before ripping a pull side roller. Great match.

continued -

Darcy and Ben lost to Christian and Zak - Christian has been hot for a while now and it looked to be another one of those nights that no one could get in his way.

In the kingseat match Garry stepped up his game and made several blocks - Tobin kept on passing well and sure enough Tobin and Garry put it away, taking Kingseat.

In the B side Garret and Christof were up against a solid team of Mike and Ritchie - Garret and Christof have both been steadily improving and I think they caught them off guard at first. Christof didn't miss a shot in the entire match, watch out for that pull kick. Garret was solid blocking well and stayed mentally in it with some top level players, it was great to see Garret and Christof pull off the win.

Carlos and Brian beat Dan and Cam, then came up against Christof and Chad. Christof was on two teams because we had an odd number of players. The game went back and forth a few times, Carlos and Brian got up 4-2 in the third, but Chad and Christof fought backinto the game well and got the ball with a chance to shoot for the win! Brian came up huge as usual, and got the ball up to Carlos, he shot a push and was blocked, but caught the ball again. He had it on the near wall and cut the ball through the D to take the win at meat ball in front of a pretty big crowd at that time.

Darcy and Ben vs Will and Sam. Another epic match that went 4-5 5-4 5-4, the entire match was played at a really high level with few mistakes anywhere. There wasn't really any turning point, so I'll just jump right to the last ball. Sam got it on the wall - tapped it off the far wall and went immediately into a squared off rocket of a pull shot and ripped it for the win. Sam scored at least 10 goals from his 2 bar on the night, and gave me another 10 perfect passes that ended up in goals too.

Zak and Christian beat us, and then went into the final. Christian has won 5 of the last 6 finals he has come into from the B side. 5 of 6 double dip attempts is an impressive stat - and Christian has a lot of impressive stats.

Zak was really solid throughout the night too it is worth mentioning, his Defense was hard to read and showed a lot of different looks, he made his fair share of blocks in every match.

Garry and Tobin had kingseat and the serve, sure enough, Tobin passed and scored. Christian was really passing well throughout the night, but Tobin got onto his 5 again this time, making a few blocks. Garry was the big story in the final though. Christian's shot percentage was one of the lowest I have ever seen in any match, and Garry scored a couple beautiful rolling pulls. Tobin maintained his composure too - but would it be enough... The first game game down to 4-4, and Christian had the ball, took a time out. Garry makes the block, Tobin picks it up on the 5 - Automatic. Tobin and Garry take the first one. The second game didn't get that close - and Tobin and Garry won the match and the tournament... without losing a game in any match that I saw. Need some confirmation on that stat though.

Great playing Tobin and Garry, congratulations on the win and essentially a perfect night of foosball. Great playing all around to everyone though, I think I saw at least 5 games that went right down to the wire.

In the 2nd DYP Karli and Dan pulled off an upset victory over Chad and Mike. I heard Dan say to Karli - don't mock the hack! That is a great slogan for a tough win that went to the 2nd set. Sorry I can't comment on the gameplay in those games I didn't see much happen.

What a night!

1st Tobin and Garry
2nd Christian and Zak
3rd Will and Sam

2nd DYP
1st Karli and Dan
2nd Chad and Mike
3rd Des and Christof

Singles at 7:30 sharp this week!

1800 doubles will start after we are a few rounds in to the singles event, around 9:00 probably.

Nice write up. Congrats to Garry and Tobin on the win

Author: Chris.K Reply #4 Posted: Jan 26 2011 9:13AM

Great write up Will. Next week do we have to choose between singles and the 1800 Doubles?

Author: melanoir Reply #5 Posted: Jan 26 2011 10:13AM

yep that was a damn good night of foosball

great write up

Author: Will Reply #6 Posted: Jan 26 2011 11:06AM

No, you do not have to choose between the 1800 and Singles. I took notes throughout the night to help with my write up

Depending on the turnout I might have to change some games to race to 7 in B sides, but I'll make a game time decision on that.

Given the intense action over the last couple of weeks, I'd like to start taping games more often. I think I'll start doing a 'match of the week video' but I'm not sure if I should distribute via disks or on a site somewhere or what. Also not sure if I'll have to ask people to pay as it will be fairly time consuming...

So it looks like I don't know much of anything at this point!

What do you guys think?

Also, good write-up Will. There were some amazing matches last night and even though we didn't beat you and Sam I think our match ended perfectly and all four of us played to our current potential. Great games!

It would be nice if we could embed the game of the week into the front page of edmontonfoosball.com

biggest write up ever... youtube is the answer for video, easy to upload and i am pretty sure you can embed it...

Great writeup Will

We did lose 1 game-to Chad & Christoff. It was a good match as they used some key switches to capitalize.

Tobin did play at a level that I was unsure he was capable off-going toe to toe with Christian twice & Will once was a daunting task but he did not look out of place in any of those matchups. His shooting % was high throughout the night.

Christian did shoot a low % in both matchups with us- I think this was a combination of my rollover D being on, and his shooting to be a little off.

I'm surprised, astonished, amazed and astounded he didn't use the claw and shoot his pull.

Author: RezaREX Reply #12 Posted: Jan 27 2011 1:01PM

The pull was broken.... :(

Author: Will Reply #13 Posted: Jan 27 2011 1:04PM

Garry would have raced his pull shot.

Author: S. Edwards Reply #14 Posted: Jan 27 2011 1:05PM

You have 5 weeks to get it fixed. I sent you a text about Friday. Let me know otherwise I'll make other plans.

Author: .Garry Reply #15 Posted: Jan 27 2011 1:08PM

lol-he tried "the claw" pull in the first match-but I refused to give him the long- and forced him into middles which he doesn't like shooting. He didn't try the pull at all in the second match- but did shoot his rollover better at the start of it-he made some good adjustments- but then I adjusted.

Author: S. Edwards Reply #16 Posted: Jan 27 2011 1:12PM

strange, the claw usually shoots all by itself.

Author: Will Reply #17 Posted: Jan 27 2011 1:15PM

Garry got into Christians head a bit, one time Christian had just executed a really nice wall pass, set up and started walking his roller with confidence. I leaned over to Ben and said "wow this one is guaranteed hey?" but when Christian shot he sort of limp wristed it and Garry was on it no problem. Christian did shoot really well to open the match though, but as Garry said he adjusted a bit.

One interesting thing was that Garry's D was really different than I have seen before. Lots of switching between which 2 bar man was blocking, lots of showing different holes then taking away something else... it was really impressive.

Awesome job on the write up Will! Garry, you were rock solid the whole night! You really forced everyone to take shots that they normally aren't comfortable shooting. Made key blocks early on in pretty much all of the matches too! We completed a few passes from the 2-3 and those possessions for me are a huge bonus! I had a good, consistent night of foos thanks to the words of confidence that Garry had to say. Having someone reminding me to take my time, not be tentative on the 5-bar, and be conscious of what the defense was offering me made all the difference! Great playing Garry! I'm not gonna lie, I definitely surprised myself a bit because I don't think I have played like that ever!

Author: S. Wilkins Reply #19 Posted: Jan 27 2011 4:16PM

Yes Will great write up. So awesome that we will be able to lok back on Tuesday nights and with these notes. It would be great to have a game of the week to go along with them. I like how we have the news section on the web site we should put the updates on there as well so they are all in one place.

So this past tuesday was great! I must mention carlos and brian I think they played great. Huge shots from the back and great containing. Carlos had some crazy push shots and just keeps fighting! Garry and Tobin played some amazing foos. Tobins five and then is calm MONSTER roller just unstopable! Also Ben and Darcy played very well together both really composed. Desmond is a player that has been continually improving, damn race D! Ha. So many more that I want to play more. Watch out for Cam and I next week in the 1800 limited.

Hey we need Roger to come out again! Well I'm looking forward to playing more foos! Come on Vegas!

Next saturday I want to put in as many hours as I can to try get ready for the long days of foos in vegas. So anyone in to play at gateway, time out or e and c starting at ten or eleven let me know!
