Topic: Tuesday March 1st Results and Points Update BYP

This week we did a BYP. It was a three tiered event, essentially.

In the second tier some tough first round matchups included Mike and Mike playing against Christof and Ray. Mike and Mike came out firing on all cylinders, with Mike Big Dog Johnston the Terminator banking a few off each wall. Christof and Ray put up a good fight but were no match for them - this time.

Mike and Mike ran into Brian and Carlos, and the match was a tight one needless to say. When it went to 4-4 in the third it was anyones guess what might happen, but sure enough Carlos put it away to make it to the kingseat game.

Christof and Ray went into the losers bracket and went on an incredible run, defeating Rob and Devin, then getting redemption on Mike and Mike, then had a match against Brian and Carlos. Both teams were shooting well, and Ray looked like he adjusted a little better to Tornado tables today. Christof had a strong 5 bar throughout the event, probably getting 2 to 1 the amount of possessions of anyone else. Christof and Ray won and completed the incredible comeback to the final after a first round loss.

Cam and Darrel were out to prove a point though, the final was a quick one! Cam's 5 is vegas ready now, and Darrel squares off his rocket push shot so well that you really need a strong zone to be able to block it. Cam has a decent roller and pull shot now too, so a lot of times it is tough to string more than one or two blocks together because of all his options.

In Tier 3 which started a little later, we had Devin and Rob put on a bit of a clinic. Newcomers Mike and Colin were self professed "Newbies", but it really looked like they knew what they were doing. With new rules and a new table, they both looked pretty comfortable in what was there first event. The first match they played against Jake and Kat went to the third game, but Mike burried a few push shots and push kicks that would have kept even a strong pro guessing at what was coming next.

Devin and Rob won the first match they had, then played against Mike and Colin - the match went to the third game and came down to the wire, but Devin and Rob pulled it off.

Colin and Mike beat Karli and Ben after Karli had been ripping rollovers for most of the match, then Colin came up with a big block on the last ball, and Mike fired it home for the win.

In the final, Devin and Rob were not to be outdone, and with the victory Devin has now gone back to back weeks with 1st place victories under his belt.

In Tier 1 there were quite a few epic battles. Tier 1 was using a 3 out of 5 format instead of the typical 2 out of 3. With the Hall of Fame Classic Tournament coming up in Vegas in about a week it was full fledged preparation mode for a lot of us.

Chris and Mike vs Darcy and Sam was the first matchup. Chris was passing and scoring really well, and Mike was banking up a storm again. Sam and Darcy looked like they really had some team chemistry kick in too, utilizing switches well both offensively and defensively throughout the match. Game 1 went to Darcy and Sam, game 2 went to Mike and Chris. The 5 bar war was an intense one, when games are being played at that high of a level, the matches are won and lost on the 5 bar. Darcy has been nailing his stick wall really well lately, and Chris tic tacks the ball around well and can pick any hole on even the strongest 5 bar defense. The next two games were split too, taking it to the 5th game. Darcy and Sam jumped up to a 3-1 lead quickly, and it was too much for Mike and Chris to overcome. Sam and Darcy moved on to play Simon and Christian in the second round.

Simon and Christian are a powerhouse team and were heavy favorites to win the event, and they showed that class in this match. Don't get me wrong, Darcy and Sam put up a good fight. Darcy was RIPPING his rollover, and timing the holes well - he scored a very high percentage of his shots throughout the match. The only problem was that he didn't get enough shots to win the match, Christians 5 bar was precise, fast, and powerful - Simon shooting from the back was unstoppable, and his passes were clutch too. I think it was 3 strait, taking them to the kingseat game.

In the final it was Ben and Myself against Christian and Simon. The game went back and forth again a hundred times, momentum changes every few minutes. Simon scored a handful of monstrous push kicks from the 2 bar, and found gaps through our zone on several occasions. Ben was a brick wall in the back, forcing Christian to switch between rollover and pull shot on a few occasions. That defense proved to be the difference as we won 5-3 in the 5th game.

Great tournament by all involved.

Great playing last night- Will your game was on and it showed in the end- & Ben's D was unbeatable as well, which makes for a hard team to beat.

Thanks Garry - We are ready for Vegas now I think.

You and Tobin seemed to look pretty comfortable again too, really just one possession in the 2nd and 3rd game away from taking those ones.

I scored 100% on Ben from my three bar if I remember correctly

Author: S. Edwards Reply #8 Posted: Mar 3 2011 12:58PM
