This week we did Super Singles, and had another great turnout. We had 3 tiers, with the 8 Pro's facing off in Tier 1, an extremely tough tier 2 including the next 8 highest ranked players, and a deep Tier 3 field including 15 more players.

It wouldn't have been possible for us to have 31 players in a singles event before this week, but we had 6 tables (thanks to Chris/Sam/Tobin/Christof for helping set up and bringing lights) for tables 5 and 6.

In Tier 3 there was a few solid story lines to follow.

Devin was really impressive in his first two matches, taking on the two strongest snake shots in Tier 3 in back to back fashion. He best Danny in his first match, Danny is a returning player from the U of A scene that can be deadly with the roller, shooting to both sides well. Karli was his second opponent and I think everyone that has played her knows that she can be devastating with a roller set also. Devin ended up 3rd place in Tier 3.

Jake was beaten in an early round by Rob, and after that started ripping up the other side of the chart. 5 consecutive matches Jake won using a few really great plays. Jake doesn't play the typical tournament style game, but he has great hand speed. I saw at least 5 goals that he put the ball off the back wall and one timed it into the net. He blocked well, fought hard, and deserved the 2nd place finish that he got.

Chad came into the night with 800 points and proved that he is worth more points than that. The Tier 3 field was tough, and a few times players had Chad on the ropes. Jake was using the handspeed that got him there and took the first game, and it was tied 3-3 in the second. Chad took over - ball control is everything in foosball - and Chad lived with the ball. Rod to rod, Chad made the grabs and then smart decisions with the ball. He scored well from his two bar and picked good holes on his 3 bar. Chad won Tier 3 singles.

Tier 2 was an impressive event too. The field was really tight - and I'm not sure that there was a pre-tournament favorite in this one. Des was the #1 seed and certainly a contender coming in, but Sam (who asked to play up a tier higher than his seeding) came out flying. His 2 bar was rocking, that snap he gets on the ball is devastating, because even if you block it the ball still rattles in to your net a lot. Sam hit some nice 2 hole split's on his pull shot and walked away with the victory.

Christof was also playing up in Tier 2 after winning the Tier 3 singles last time. I saw Christof shooting a pull shot, a lot better than I had seen him shoot it before. He was setting up well, getting in a powerful stance, and exploding to the hole that he picked. Christof beat Justin on a meat ball game that he had to fight back with 2 goals with his back against the wall. Christof only lost to Paul in the event, and ended up third in tier 2 because Paul owned him twice!

Paul was a beast this week. Paul is always consistent, smart, safe with the ball, and never does anything that isn't highly efficient. He plays textbook foosball when it comes to decision making. In a text earlier in the day Paul said to me "Im going to play scrappy tonight, (lots of hacking and fighting)" which was great to see! He nailed it too, and fought HARD. After beating Christof for the second time, he played Jamie in the final.

Jamie is a player that's results are always good, he's a player that has toured and hit the big events before - and now that he is playing every week I think the top 5 is a legitimate immediate target. I wouldn't say that about many people, but Jamie has it all - complete package of shooting, passing, 2 bar, defence, mental strength, and the ability to bear down and fight when the going gets tough.

Paul was still hot though, and took the first match in the final. Jamie came back with a vengeance and won the next two games they played and with that took 1st place in Tier 2.

In Tier 1 we were missing the #1 ranked player in Edmonton, Simon Edwards - but still had an incredible field littered with the best the city has to offer. Carey came out firing on all cylinders (did I use that already in this write up?) and beat the #1 seed Christian Dunn in the opening match of the event. The shock upset was followed up with a loss to Garry but then two more great wins against Tobin and then Ben. Carey took 3rd place in Tier 1 and proved yet again that in singles he is one tough guy to mess with.

Garry was in fine form again, after a second place showing at the last Tier 1 singles event and ranked as the #5 player in the City. With new/grippy foosballs Garry's backpin is MUCH more devastating than with old ones. It is sometimes impossible to tell which hole the ball goes in, and one time he went around my deadbar lead defense on his pull side and brushed the ball back inside my illpositioned goalie rod that was against the far wall. Garry took 2nd place, and I won the event.

Chris Kerr deserves his fair share of cred on the board too. On my way to victory he was the only match that went to meat ball, 4-4 in the 3rd. He lit me up from his 3 bar and passed well too.

Thanks to everyone that Will mentioned for helping with the set up on Tuesday. Also a special thanks must go out to Roger who provided his time and his vehicle to help us get the tables delivered and set up over the weekend and Monday. Nice work Rog.

Rog was incredible.
I heard that he once moved and set up two complete Foosball tables at once by himself, by shooting a push shot. Kabaam.

Thanks for the help Roger!

Hey Will, Great write up and Great playing last night. I gave you my A+ game and still couldn't beat ya. Great playing man. Did you happen to grab my drill last night?

Author: Will Reply #4 Posted: Mar 30 2011 3:53PM

I grabbed it, its in my trunk. You were definitely playing great in that match. I was pretty sure I was going to lose.

For the record, everyone is still way better than me next week too and you will all probably beat me again.

lol, "For the record, everyone is still way better than me next week too and you will all probably beat me again." You can sell it Will but we're not buying it!

Ya I might have to try the reverse smack talk too for next week.

Thanks for grabbing my drill. Maybe I can come grab it sometime this week.

I'll be going to gateway tonight to move tables around and maybe get a permanent location for the other two tables, I can drop it off or you can meet me at gateway and we can take down your light and then give you the drill too. around 7
