Last night we did a DYP, with two tiers of 8 teams each - a low turnout of only 32 players (relatively speaking).
In the Tier 1 draw Cam and Des were faced off against Rick and Christof. The match was a tight one, but Cam and Des had some passes nailed down and in the end that might have been the difference maker.
Another first round match was Justin and Darcy against Sam and Garry. Garry played front in the first game, but was having issues scoring on Justin. Justin has lightning fast hands and probably is the fastest racer there is in Edmonton. For a guy without much experience compared to the rest of tier 1, he sure does hang in there with anyone. Darcy scored really well, and then in the second game Sam and Garry switched, and Sam started to pick some nice holes and was solid on the 5 row. The game went to 4-4 and Darcy had the ball on his 5, rattled a pass through, and with a quick set up ripped a deep fast pull side roller that got around Garry's d to win the match.
Sam and Garry wouldn't let it get to them. They beat Paul and Chris (who managed to go 2 and out, while only losing to the 1st and 2nd place teams). Sam and Garry beat Des and Cam.
Jamie and Tobin lost the first game to Justin and Darcy, but then switched and it worked out well. Tobin was shooting lights out, and Jamie was a brick wall with a really fast shaking 3 man defense. Tobin and Jamie won the second game, then 5-0 in the third to take it.
For kingseat Tobin and Jamie were playing Chad and I. We split the first two games, then they got up 2-0 in the third. We fought back with 3 strait goals to go up 3-2, then ended up ahead 4-3. Tobin had the serve, passed on Chad and then scored on me. At 4-4 Tobin got the ball again on his 5, passed on Chad and scored on me. It was really frustrating, but there isn't much you can do when a guy just scores every time he gets the ball. Good playin Tobin.
Sam and Garry got revenge on Justin and Darcy, then proceeded to absolutely smoke Chad and I. Sam "Thick Bear Arms" Wilkins was a monster on the 5 row, and even though I was shooting great, Sam shot better. Sam hit some nice splits to open the match, then after those tight inside shots he had opened up the strait and the long. After a time out, I got back to make a block (but didn't) and Sam ripped a long to the tightest hole imaginable.
In the final Sam and Garry almost pulled off an incredible comeback, and Garry (who was playing front in this one) was strong enough on the 5 to get 3 shots for the win, but couldn't put it away on Jamie's ever adjusting defense. Tobin sure enough made the most of his opportunity and won the match and the tournament!
In the second tier, a lot of great matches again. Danny and Garret won the tournament with a great fight by Devin and Mike. Rob and Dan also had a great run, but lost some really tight matches to end up third.

"The one person that I'm not worried about is Samuel "tweeny bieber arms" Wilkins! Don't even think about shooting, you better just clear all day so I don't STUFF YOU!"
I guess it was good that he played up against you then...
Sam did play well- very composed on the 5 bar and took pointers well and played a thoughtful game. Tobin passed on me better than he ever has and that may have been the difference-good playing by all!

Nice win Tobin and Jamie. And a nice job to Garry and Sam.

Sam was on a mission. You could see it in his body language and table presence - he wanted to win. He focused, and executed everthing he tried.
It is nice to see guys like Tobin, Jamie, and Sam stepping up (as well as Garry's continued excellence). The more competition at the top, the better off our entire scene is in Edmonton.
In Tobin's last 10 weekly events: 1st (3 times) Partners: Garry, Christian, and Jamie 2nd (1) Partner: Devin 3rd (1) Partner: Garry
Pretty impressive results, and enough to put a scare into the guys at the top.

Good job Tobin. Moved up to 7th overall. Keep it up buddy. Stellar 5 BTW.

Congrats Jamie on the top 10. That is huge, but I can see you reaching higher levels still. I think there is a good chance that someone between 7 and 12 could crack the top 5 soon.

I see CK making the biggest jumps. He's had the steepest curve as of late. No offense to the others, as we've all seen what Tobin can do when he's head down and a$$ up.

I'll place my bet on whoever goes to the most tour events.
Simon, Christian, Will, Ben, Garry - those are the 5 players with the most tour events - and the most points.
You gain experience in majors, like the Fireball tournament, or the Calgary events. You gain more experience in a tour event like the HOFC or Worlds. The Washington State Open coming up is the type of thing that when you get back, you are a better player.
Anyway I could see any of the people in that 6-12 range doing it, but its going to require not only practice, but also mental strength and experience.

Thanks Will, Garry, and Simon. Most importantly Thank You Jamie! Had some great matches that were punch for punch and some serious fighting had to be done to pull this one off! Jamie your mental intensity impresses me every time you step up to the table. Could have gone either way all night but you stepped up big every time the pressure was on!
Sam, whatever arms you have (Bieber/Bear hybrid I suppose) just keep it up!
