Topic: Tuesday May 3 Results and Points Update

Author: Will Original Message Posted: May 5 2011 12:32PM

This Tuesday we did a BYP, with two tiers. Both Tier 1 and Tier 2 were full 8 team charts, which means we had 32 players not counting the players that showed up just for pick up games etc.

Now that we have 6 tables, the tournament runs really smoothly. The tables are playing great and the location seems to provide enough room.

In the Tier 2 BYP we had a powerhouse first round matchup of Garret and Christof against Ed and Conrad. Conrad was hitting his usual pull kick/push kick series, and he hits the ball so hard that even if a block was made, the ball found its way into the net sometimes. Ed shooting his back pin series was also clutch from the back, and Ed and Conrad won the match.

Karli and Ray Thompson were on the other side of the chart, and after beating Peter and Danny they faced off against Dan Kimber and Chris Gallant. Dan and Chris were a solid team, one of the pretournament favorites. Karli was solid up front, passing really well and taking over the match on the 5 row. She shot really well and had Ray blocking extremely well, and they pulled off the win to progress to the kingseat match.

Dan and Chris went on a big run through the B side of the chart, winning there way back to the final including getting redemption on Karli and Ray, but it proved too be not quite enough as Conrad and Ed won the final and took the Tier 2 BYP championship.

In the Open event, Paul and Chad beat Justin and Mike in the first round, then faced off against Simon and I. We got up to a 4-1 lead in the first game, then they switched and pulled back to 4-4, but we got the winning goal. In the second game Chad went back up front, but they fell behind 4-2, again they switched and pulled back to even but couldn't put the game away. Maybe next time Paul should start the second game up front, because they out scored us 5-2 when Paul was up front. Chad scored a powerful slicer to the long hole from his two bar, and Paul timed a beautiful strait to tie the 2nd game. In the end Simon was stroking that long too well throughout the night, unless someone was sitting on that hole, the ball was in the net.

Darcy and Chris were probably the big story of the night though. After going through Justin and Mike, then Jamie and Tobin, then Will (on 2 teams) and Kevin, they played against Christian and Garry. Darcy and Chris were switching well and both looked strong in each position. Darcy was really hanging in there on the 5 row, really looking like a pro now up front. Darcy thinks the game well - and a lot of times makes blocks that he has no business making on the 5 row, then works the ball up to his 3 row where he is devastating.

In this match Christian and Garry wouldn't go down easily... They split the first two games, and went to game 3. Darcy got a 3 bar possession at 3-3 and took a time out at a perfect time. With a shot to go ahead 4-3 he put the ball back into play, and shot relatively quickly but was blocked by Garry's switching defense.

Christian got the ball and put his team ahead 4-3. Chris and Darcy slopped one out to pull the match to meat ball, and Christian got the ball - he looked certain to put it away, made a great pass, set up and ripped a deep fast push side... which is exactly what Chris was ready for, making a huge block off the table. Chris got the ball and put it back in play, but Christian got the steal on his 5 row, made the pass and this time he wouldn't be stopped. He hit the same shot but at a better time, nice deep push side roller into the corner.

3rd place for Darcy and Chris in this tournament is still a solid result, congrats and good playing.

In the final Simon and I lost the first match to Christian and Garry, but we came back strong in the 2nd set. Simon was certainly the difference as he kept the form that makes him BY FAR the highest points player in Edmonton at this time. Simon went 5 for 5 up front in one match, and even though Christian was essentially matching him shot for shot we did enough to get the win.

Congrats to Simon on setting a new record for the most points obtained. Christian previously held the highest score ever at 1604

Thanks for the props Will, it feels good to actually be able to compete with you guys now, and alot of how well we played had to be due to Chris's versatility. He just seems to come up with big stops when you need them and can also move up for a big goal too. Always fun playing with that guy.

Nice work on the rating Simon, but don't get too cozy.. I'm a comin!

I also want to commend Kevin on playing so well with Will too. Some guys buckle when playing with/against more experienced players, but he just stood up and played his game, made some great clears and scored at key times, with Will up front, this was a tough team.

Ya, sometimes I feel like my write ups are too focused on my matches (because I remember them best) so I neglected mentioning Kevin's play....

WOW was he incredible though. He blocked Christian really well, forcing him to score maybe 25% at best. If I could have scored well on Garry we probably would have won that match, but Garry was a brick back there and Christians 5 row was stronger too. If I played better we would have won that match though, Kevin kept us in that match.

Then against Chris and Darcy he was strong again, he really doesn't feel the pressure which is good. He cleared well also and made good blocks, although not as many as against Christian.

In the two matches that we won he made adjustments and was playing well, deserves a lot of credit. It was cool to see him hang in there in Tier 1.

Worth mentioning is that a lot of players have played really well against a pro or two here and there in Pro/Am's etc, but it is REALLY tough when you are up against teams like Darcy and Chris or Christian and Garry, even if you shut a guy down and everything is working well, the other team can adjust either by switching or just changing up the style (like Christian switching to a pull instead of roller). Great playing Kevin

Darcy, now that I can stop your slow quick thing you use by parking my five in the lane I'm not to worried about you catching me

Seriously though, you and Chris played exceptional foos except for the resets Chris was getting a little jumpy in net!

Author: Will Reply #5 Posted: May 5 2011 8:09PM

haha. I remember the first goal when you scored a strait Simon... I was just watching the ball bobble around and thinking "how long until Simon says reset". I think you did a good job of using that to your advantage though, because you caught Chris jumping a little bit and then drilled some good inside holes too.

It is tough to remember when getting scored on, but sometimes it is best to not watch the ball/shooter and just focus your eyes on your own defense, make sure you are covering two holes that the shooter might choose to shoot at. That advice isn't directed at Chris, because Chris is clearly in the top few players for actual save percentage, but I thought that maybe it is good advice to put on here anyway.

That's fine Simon, I'm prototyping a pass that originates from the first man on the five and ends up at the third man on the three. I may have to pull that out if I start feeling the pressure.
