Topic: Tuesday May 10 Results and Points Update

This week we did a Pro Am draw your partner. We have done a ton of these, at least once a month for the entire time we have been running the league... I don't think many have been as exciting and event filled as this weeks tournament.

In Tier 1 the event was opened up with a big match of Christian and Brian facing off against Danny and I. Christian was passing really well, but Danny got a few big blocks early. I wasn't passing too well but I was scoring virtually every shot. In the back, Brian was calm with the ball, and scored two or three huge goals, including the go ahead goal in the second game to go up 4-3 - a big turning point. They won the match.

In the other side of the chart, Darcy and Darrel started working there way through the chart. First they took out an impressive Conrad and Chad team, then beat Ben and Christof.

That took them to an exciting kingseat match against Christian and Brian. Christian, having won 3 strait pro ams up to this time, was hot, playing great foosball. Brian was scoring a lot and making a lot of blocks too. Either way, Darcy and Darrel hadn't lost a game yet, after going 2-0 in the first two matches of the night.

In this game Christian won the flip and got the ball, set it up and scored. Got a big steal and then scored again to go up 2-0 early in game 1. It looked like things were just going to go that way for the night and just like the previous pro/ams we would see an expected result. Darrel wouldn't have any of it though, after getting the ball - he smoked one of his legendary powerful push shots home to pull within one. Again he got the ball on the next point and put it away too, to tie the first game at two goals a piece. Determination and focus swept through the room, as Christian has a way of just turning it on when things get close like this. Again it seemed like they would take over, but Darrel got the ball, and scored a third consecutive thundering goal to go ahead 3-2. It put the momentum in their favor and gave enough of a kick to Darcy that they put away the first game, and the match. 2 strait, again.

In the B side there was a lot of action happening too, After Dan and I slopped out Ben and Christof, we took on Garry and Mikey Smoke Show Johnston. Garry was on fire, from the first drop of the ball, he played a realy good posession game. He had the ball for most of the match, and made the most of every opportunity. He was scoring really deep backpins to the push side and even hitting his rolling pull nicely. The big difference was on the 5 row though, he mixed up his options and made sure to get enough possessions to win the match. Mike was great too, but was never really under pressure because Garry was doing a good job of keeping a lead by burying the ball.

Christina and Brian played Garry and Mike next, and the game was a tight one, I didn't see much of it.. but it went to meat ball and was super close. Brian and Christian put it away to get back to the final.

The final was again one of those times you have come to expect Christian to step up and double dip whoever comes between him and the title.

If you haven't been paying attention to the happenings of foosball in Edmonton lately, you need to start watching what Darcy is doing. Darcy is clearly playing at a high pro level right now, his 5 row and 3 row are equivalent to anyone and he thinks the game really well.

After beating me in the Fireball event in Singles, and also beating Joe Ramjag (one of the top pro's from Calgary and the eventual Champion of the event) Darcy hasn't looked back. Realistically there are not many players that can pull of results like that, and then keep it up for an extended period of time.

So, this moment, this final, had a chance to make a statement. Is Darcy really one of the elite players in Edmonton?

Darcy was incredible. His defensive 5 row was ALL OVER Christian, not letting him get enough shots. Darcy was also shooting essentially 100%, just smoking the ball into the back of the net. His passing was consistent and he just looked like a pro on the table. Darcy and Darrel won the first game. In the second game though, Christian and Brian went up 3-1, and Christian got the ball on his 3 bar. He set up a pull and ripped it, but got blocked by Darrel, essentially a block/stuff all the way back into the other net. That again generated some momentum, and Darcy didn't look back. They completed the incredible, winning the pro/am... and didn't even drop a game the whole way. 2 strait every single match, in a field of some really strong teams.

Great playing Darcy and Darrel!

In Tier 2 the tournament was also event filled and exciting. Chris G and Uzair (back out after a little lay off) came out strong and won there way to the kingseat game, where they faced off against Ray and Carlos. Carlos had won a bunch of tournaments and played in a a ton of finals for a long stretch of time, but it has been a couple months of drought recently. You could see that he was fired up and ready to go on this night though. Ray was also playing strong as usual, but although he had been to a bunch of finals, has always come up short.

Ray and Carlos won the match and took kingseat, and then Uzair and Chris beat Dan and Rick (nice showing for 3rd place!) and then got back to the final. Chris has a great 5 row and a strong roller too, but Ray seemed to have him figured out a bit this week. The match was close, but Ray and Carlos wouldn't be stopped. Congrats on the win!

1st Darcy and Darrel

Darcy now has over 1200 points - that is an elite group of players including only 7 all time that have broken that number.

Congrats to all the winners on the night!

Made a typo when entering the parameters of the elo calculation... nice catch Simon.

Sorry Darcy, that moves you down to 1199 poits

Author: Darcy Reply #7 Posted: May 11 2011 1:17PM

does that mean I'm no longer an elite player? :(

Author: S. Edwards Reply #8 Posted: May 11 2011 1:22PM

you never were, you were a typo maybe I'll come out next week just to keep you under 1200

all joking aside, you and Darrel played great in the final. I'm glad I was there to see you guys play so well.

Author: Darcy Reply #9 Posted: May 11 2011 1:36PM

hah, can't wait to get a taste of some of your 1600 points!

Thanks for the support guys, FOOOOOSBALLLLL!!!

Author: Will Reply #10 Posted: May 11 2011 2:16PM

Darcy may one day join the elite company of the 1200 point club, but not now. Just an average player I guess :)

Go Foosball!

Author: melanoir Reply #11 Posted: May 11 2011 2:57PM

i dont think i can learn anything from an average player

FFFFFFOOOOSSSSeBBBBAAAALLLL

Author: S. Edwards Reply #12 Posted: May 11 2011 7:02PM

An elite player would be going to the WSO instead of coming up with excuses!

Author: Darcy Reply #13 Posted: May 12 2011 8:50AM

Hah, hopefully we have a similar turn out for worlds in september, as i've already told work i'm going to that!

Also I think it needs to be said that Darrel played amazing all night too. I know the focus of the game usually falls to the five bar, but I can remember two separate occasions where he snapped me out of a funk by scoring two or more goals in a row and got me going again. Not to mention that he was hanging in there as a goalie against top shelf players like Conrad Ben and Christian. Great playing Darrel!

Great games last week guys, congrats Darcy and Darrel. Looking forward to next Tuesday as usual. Cheers.

Yeah, solid Tuesday night everyone, and congrats to Ray and Carlos on winning the tier 2 final. Can't wait 'til next week!
