This week we did a Singles tournament! Turnout was average, with just over 30 players. We did three tiers, with the players with the highest points in Tier 1, the next highest group in Tier 2, and the lowest total points in Tier 3.
If you havn't attended any of our tournaments, and think that Tier 3 sounds easy... you should come out and try your skills against these players. Keep in mind that only people that are already pretty good at foosball show up at a tournament. This league is filled with the best players in Edmonton, and almost everyone in Tier 3 would win 100 strait games in virtually any bar in the city!
I have been tracking the web site stats lately, and we get a TON of traffic... hundreds of unique viewers daily. So I thought I would throw that out there to challenge some of the people that are just watching and not playing yet!
Tier 3 was a war again this week as usual. A huge first round matchup between Brian and Carlos (both strong favorites coming into it, and close friends also). Brian held a slight 3 - 2 head to head record advantage coming into the match. Brian came out on top moving onto the next round.
Garret won two matches and ended up playing against Devin with the winner to take on Brian for kingseat... Devin and Garret both have been playing for a similar amount of time in the league, and both are progressing quickly and likely won't be tier 3 eligible for long. The game was pretty close but Devin won and then played Brian for kingseat. Brian was still on fire after 3 strait victories, but made it 4 in this match and went to the final as the kingseat holder.
Devin came back through the B side though, and in the final he got retribution on Brian and double dipped for the win.
Tier 2 was also a tight one. I really think that all 8 of the players could have won this tournament. One of the big headlines is long time semi-pro player Mike "Smoke show" Johnston ripping through the A side. He was making his way through Sam and Cam largely off of pure energy and fight level. He was focused and in the zone, hitting banks from his 2 bar off either wall easily. His 5 row was also massive, timing holes well and smashing it home.
In the B side Paul and Chris had an intense game, that went 5-4 4-5 then was tied meat ball 4-4 in the final game. Paul got the ball up to his 3 row and looked for his trademark split. He got the ball deep enough and hit it just right, but Chris was there for the block. Chris put the ball away from his two bar to win the match and move on.
Chad was also making his way through the B side riding a hot two bar and a vast array of tricky shots from his 3 row, it was enough to beat Sam and Dan. He probably would have gone all the way but was beaten by Cam twice, in the first round and in the B side for the 3rd place game. I dont know that anyone else would have beaten Chad in the tier, but Cam took care of him for everyone else.
Justin was the big story though, his explosive style on both the 2 and 3 row have been quite intimidating for a long time, but now his 5 row is on par with a lot of players in tier 2. It makes Justin really tough to beat when he scores pretty much every shot on his 3 bar, especially now that he isn't having trouble passing on anyone!
Justin beat Paul, then Dan, then Mike for kingseat. After Mike beat Cam for the second time, the stage was set for one of the most epic final matches the league has seen.
The game was back and forth, but Mike came out on top in the first match. The second match was where the battle took place. Justin and Mike split the first two games... at this point they had played 8 games on the night, going 4 wins each in those games. Sure enough, the score in this game went to 4-4 also, and the entire tournament came down to one ball... First Justin got the ball, set up a pull shot, but hammered a MONSTER pull kick. He got the ball out there and it was really fast, I'm not sure how.. but Smoke show Johnston was there for the huge block, knocking the ball off the table.
Mike got the ball on his two bar, patiently took his time and put a great shot on goal, it was close... but not in. The ball went back and forth with each player taking two more shots, then Justin got the ball again on his 3 bar, set up the pull... and hammered it to the long hole for the win.
Tier 1 was filled with the usual favorites... Top seed Simon Edwards awaiting the winner of Ray and Chris. I was the #2 seed waiting for the winner of Conrad and Tobin, and 4 vs 5 Garry vs Ben also in the works. Darcy was the 6 seed and he was playing against Christain Dunn. Christian has won 7 of the 12 Tier 1 Singles events... and it is obvious why when you watch him play. No one hits the ball as hard and accurately, he times defenses well and knows every trick in the book. Still on this day Darcy was up for the challenge. After splitting the first two games Darcy got up 4-3 in the third game and got the ball to his 3 row. A less experienced player would have shot the ball, then Christian would have made the block and fought back to win the match, most of the time. Darcy was smart, and took a time out. One thing that is VERY underused by non pro players is time outs at crucial times in a match. A study was done on the open divisions of a world championships once, and players shooting percentages after a time out was 25% higher than a typical shot during the flow of a game. The reason is probably that you have time to regroup your mind, make sure you execute a high percentage shot, and pick the hole you want well.
Darcy did all of those things and scored to win the match, starting a string of upsets throughout tier 1.
Conrad, with his uber fast pull kick and overpowering style beat Tobin, then Ray banked and blasted his way to a win over the eversteady and always incredible Chris Kerr.
Ben went from the # 5 seed spot to beat Garry Burgardt, then took on Simon Edwards for the chance to play against Will(thats right, 3rd person reference) in the kingseat game.
Ben is so smart at figuring out players tendancies and guessing what is coming next, he is one of the toughest players to score on anywhere. In this game Ben was also shooting lights out, and pulled off a big upset beating Edmontons run away points leader.
In the king seat match Will played a near perfect match, timing holes well and blocking well on the 5 row to create the difference in the match.
Simon was not going to go down easily though, and came back to beat Ben in the B side final after beating Christian and then Garry in the 3rd place game.
The final was quick, with both players scoring pretty well from the 3 row, with a few great blocks mixed in. You can see the final by following this link:
