We had just over 20 players show up for Super Singles this week, so we split it up into 3 tiers.
Tier 1 went down pretty much with no upsets based on points, Conrad beat Garry in the A side but then Garry got sweet revenge in the 3rd place game in the B side. Christian and I battled it out in the final and I ended up winning 5-4 in the 3rd on a complete slop. Christian put a shot off the post for the win, but it rattled back into his net unfortunately. Neither of us really played great, but it was a fun match none the less.
Tier 2 was where the real story lines of the night were. A lot of strong singles players including Chad, Taras, Bob, Mike, Paul, Brian, Carlos, and Kyle.
Carlos really seemed to figure out his singles game over the course of the night. He has such powerful 2 and 3 rows, and can hit a really good variety of shots, so it makes him really tough to block for anyone. He took out Bob in round 1 before losing to a barrage of Mike Smoke Show Johnston hacks and banks from the 2 row. Then in the B side he climbed his way through arch nemeses and team mate Brian and then took out Chad as well.
Mike Johnston came in as a late entry, but put on a real show. The thing with Mike is that in Singles he can really take out anyone on any given day. He brought the intensity that he needs to bring to be successful, and really played a fast and smart game at the same time. Smokey had a lot of success with his 5 row... moving the ball from one side of the table to the other and hitting holes in any still defence. Of course his two bar was as sick as ever, hitting some pull shots and some nice inside banks.
Paul Humberstone was too much for even Mike to handle though. In the A side final, Mike came out strong and won 5-1 or 5-2 in the first game, but Pizzy essentially out thought his opponent and found a way to get on all of Mikes primary scoring options. Mike blocked really well from Paul's 3 bar, but Paul was hitting it hard enough that he often got 2 - 3 shots in succession. Throughout the match Paul shot JW's, Longs, Straits, and Splits from his pull shot set. Pauls 5 was rocking too.. over the past few months Paul added a good downhill wall to his tic-tac stick lane pass, which leaves the defender guessing which hole to block. Paul took the next two games.
In the final, Paul again was taken to the 3rd game by Mikey. At 3-3 Paul had the ball on his 2 row, and made a play that left bystanders in shock. He played the ball off the back wall at about the same speed as a shot, showed great anticipation and footwork by getting the jump all the way up to the 3 row. Even if he had caught the ball it would have been amazing, but he essentially deflected it from his outside 3 bar man strait into a mini pull kick, crushing the ball with his middle man to go up 4-3. Mike got one back before Paul ended up winning it 5-4 in the 3rd, but it was that 4-3 goal that really turned the tide in such a close match.
Congrats on a huge FIST PLACE for Paul!
In Tier 3 we saw Kieran prove that he belonged up in tier 2, going virtually uncontested throughout the tier. Maria put up a really strong showing knocking off Marko and Scott on her way to 2nd place in Tier 3.

I thought the story of the night was Maria. Rarely playing singles as she does and finishing 2nd in tier 3-way to go Maria! Also winning the Super crossover vs Christian was no small accomplishment whether she had to get to 3 and him to 8 or not.
I found it difficult playing on the Fireball-only playing 1 time per year is hard to adapt to, and then playing the Super crossover on Tornado was also a challenge after finally figuring out the Fireball.
Fun night!

I really wanted to watch Maria playing Christian, the cheering was really good to hear! Unfortunately I was getting my ass handed to me by Kieran at the same time.
For the $$ we had one person from Tier 1, one person from Tier 2, and 2 people from Tier 3. Seems like a really good breakdown for how the Tier's worked out.
