I am pretty sure that Matt Botros and Olavo Tavares are the top 2 Canadian finishers in open singles at the worlds ( 17/24?). Will need to get the final results to verify as Mario and Eric D won a few matches also. Moya Tielens and Audrey for the women. |

I'm pretty for sure I won't be going with only partial cause it still cost me...(ehem..Eric) $1000 CAD. Pretty sure I'm not about to go through that again..and specially on my own. Was bad enough the other times. So..dunno what everyone else is feeling bout that, but I'm pretty sure I'm out, which unfortunately means so is Audrey. (Sorry hun. Had a great time playing with you..you are a very very strong player and I think we would have done very well overall if not won the whole damn thing.) *hugs* Moya |

I'm waiting to see the official results, but when i looked at the charts it appeared that Olavo finished one place higher than Matt. Mario had a death bracket (played Billy Pappas 2nd round, and then Tony Sprederman in loosers side), and I didn't fair much better - i think mario and i finished the same. So Olavo would be named Canada's 2007 National Sinlges Champion. Olavo and Matt would be named Canada's 2007 National Doubles Champions. Matt was very interested in going to italy - but can only attend if Olavo is going. I didnt get a clear indication from Olavo if he was interested in going to Italy or not. |

If Olavo isn't going then why can't TSAC pick the next highest finisher? Either You or Mario? |

We can't pick someone because the ITSF was very clear this year as to how National Champions can be named. If TSAC was to simply name or pick our national champions (by some non competitive process) we would of had to name them by May 30th. After that point we had to tell the ITSF what competitve process would be used, and when the results would be available. In early Augaust we informed the ITSF that the highest placing players in open singles (both men and women) at the tornado worlds would be used to determine our national champions. It might be understandable if we named the next highest placing finisher(s), but i'm not sure on that. That would be like Moya's position. She's earned a partially paid trip by finishing 1st - but cant go - but she/we cant just name the next highest placing women and let her go instead. The ITSF's been very clear on that issue. But it comes at a cost to them, where us sending national champions (on their own coin) doesnt cost ITSF anything. I could always inquire - but we'll have to see if Olavo really wants to go or not. |

Olavo, I am very interested in going to Italy to represent Canada after our finish at the worlds. I think that you playing forward on the non-tornado and goalie on the tornado tables and me pitting and playing foward respectively could work very well. I had so much fun in Vegas!! Thanks to everybody!!! I've learned so many things... ! And Moya, don't worry, I don't want to go in Italy either... My flight was cancelled monday morning  and I got home at 2:15am... at least I got home on the same day  |

Audrey, glad to hear you made it back ok. After trying to help you i actually missed my flight with those crazy line ups for security. But they put me on the next one, and my connector was delayed just the right amount of time, so i made it home on the same flight i was originally supposed to. Matt: I dont think Olavo reads these boards - at least i've never seen him post. I talked to Sean Lee at work (we both work for IBM), and he's going to see if he can get the word from Olavo and see if he is interested in going. I think you guys would make a strong team - and represent Canada well. |

Eric we need to find out the placing in open singles. Can you contact Valley? I am quite that Olavo did not place higher than Matt. Matt won 2 matches in the winners side which should put him 17/24. Valley has posted up to 13/16 and Olavo is not there so he at best 17/24. When Taha and I spoke previously if there was a tie there should have been a playoff for that spot. In addition if a player did not want to go the next highest finisher would take their place. |

i'll try and find out the finishes. just an fyi, they didnt merge the qualifiers with the seeds in a 64 player bracket, like they normally do. To make up for lost time, they did in at a 128 bracket. So some of matt's wins might of been to get to 64. Last i looked at the charts, i saw olavo's name deeper than matt's - but i'll find out to be sure - those charts were not exactly trustworthy that weekend. |

Eric, Regardless of how they moved from qualifiers to 64, Matt was telling me he got to 17-24 (now maybe the trustworthiness of the charts contributed to that opinion and it could be incorrect) So depending on the accuracy of above, since Olavo is not in the top 16, which Vifa posted he isn't, then at worst Matt is tied with him. |

Matt actually had 3 wins on the A-side of OS, which in a 128 chart puts him in 17/24. His first win was over Hans Friedrich Kirchner, not T-Mac. |

Like I said, i looked at the charts after both matt and olavo where out, and saw olavo's name in the chart, but did not see Matt's name. I did see Matt's seed number (74). There is a point in the charts where it stops showing the last name, and just shows the number. Tavares could be seen, but Botros could not be found. but i have put in calls into valley and USTSF and the ITSF for the full results - so we can know to be sure. I have just been asked by the ITSF to submit who's going from Canada - so we have a bit of time - they havent given me a deadline, but i asked for one. Well Brian, and Taha, what's the call if we do end up with both Matt and Olavo finishing tied? Its easy for doubles - yea they can still both be the doubles national champs. But what about singles? we can only send one. |

I sent an e-mail to Taha on this. We did already vote on a mechanism to break a tie. See the EXEC VOTE: 2007 National Champions on the TSAC exec forum. "In case of a tie (in either singles or doubles), the onus is on the players that finished in the tie to play a heads-up best 2/3 match to decide who finishes higher and report the results to TSAC. In the case of more than 2 players tied (for example in the 17-24 bracket, etc), a round-robin can be organized and the results reported to TSAC. If there exists a tie, and no heads-up results are reported, TSAC will select amongst the tied players using USTSA points." |

CONGRATZ!! and Olavo was 2nd highest finisher, so they can be the doubles team. Matt, I need to know as soon as possible (like yesterday) if you plan on going. I'll also need to konw what table you plan to choose as your home table (i'm assuming tornado, but i gotta ask). Talk to Olavo, and let me know if you both are able to go and represent Canada in doubles. congrats to our national champs. well done. |

Olavo will not be attending the World Championships in Italy i talked to him today. He told me that its just way to expensive to get nothing in return. I'm not sure if the prize money is the same as last year but in doubles Eric and I received 750 euros for coming in second place. That's perty shitty for a World Championship when they don't even help you out to get there. Congrats Matt on your highest placing kick some ass. I know you will represent us well. Here Some tips, if you want them. When i went to Italy last year i saw Billy lose first round to this guy from Denmark. I was watching Billy at the beginning of that weekend He was playing on every table except for Tornado. He had a really hard time adjusting back to Tornado when he had to in his match. Play a couple of pick up games on all the tables just to get a little feel. Just so you have an idea of what you need to do to steal. When you play Bonzini. Chip pass, Stick Wall, and hard wall pass are the easiest things to do. Brush is difficult because the ball doesn't role true. Shoot a Pull Shot on the 3. Set it up on the front pin roughly in the middle of the table and move it over. The ball should be about a 1/4 of an inch in front of the man. Once its set up shoot it exactly like Tornado. Defending Never give A Dead man D-Fence. Its just way to easy to get around. Its effortless. Garlando These guys will slop you out like crazy. Watch for 5 bar shots. Watch there 2 rows some of the best 2 rows in the game. Dalibor, Teke and Rob Atha. Tech Ball its very similar to Tornado. Roberto Sport is my favorite Table the colours just make me think I'm playing on a fa-bi. No one except for the Italians play on this table. They are good players but there not great. There Tornado game is a little week but they can still hang. Chip pass, hard wall and brush are all good here. The brush pass is a little different the ball has to be much more forward than on Tornado or else the ball sticks. A little tip don't play to much on the other tables. Just focus on the Tornado. You have the ability to beat anyone on Tornado. Be confident. Don't worry about winning on the other tables. Hope for steals. You will get them. Everyone else is worrying about you. That will mess them up on there table. Everyone screws up more in this tournament because adjusting is very difficult. If you screw up dont worry about it, soon enough it will happen to him. Except for Frederico. If you play Fred just let him go middle 10/10 just don't be to obvious. Move around like hell. Fight them with your poise you'll do great. Save your strenghths for sudden death. For example if you are losing to a bonzini player 4-2 and He is playing awesome. And you have doubts that you are going to win. Save your wepons for sudden death. Set them up for what you want to do with them in Sudden Death. For ex.( shoot nothing but straights in the Bonzini match) Then when you play them in the sudden death hit shorts and longs Than finish him off with a straight.LOL. You can beat them on Tornado They might be able to beat you on Bonzini but when it comes to Sudden death and it goes 3 balls on Tornado and 3 balls on Bonzini thats your chance to give it all you got. Pull out your arsinal and get ready for a fight. Enjoy It. Love It and good luck. Mario Ariganello |

Great post mario.. i'll add the following: get on every table quickly, and go through your 'stuff', and quickly see what minor adjustments can be made to allow your tornado game to work on those other tables. But then get back on tornado - switch between tables often.. dont practice on one table for too long - its amazing how quickly you can loose the feel for the tornado table when playing on those other tables. when i say 'stuff' above, i mean your 5, your 3, and your 2 bar. on your 3 you should be able to shoot a rollover on all tables other than bonzini - but it is possible, so maybe you can do it- i couldnt, but i've seen some german players do it very well. On your 5 - its all about ball placement - higher or lower to allow your stuff to work. I can pass brush on all tables (including bonzini, but you just have to have the ball moving faster, cause like Mario said, it does not roll true.) Whatever shot you come up with on bonzini (i shot a euro front pin - go figure), do not torque the rod (they are telescoping rods and jam very easy with any torque applied to them). Remember the games are only to 7 so you only need a few good options on the other tables in order to steal games on their table. Nothing feels as good as beating the opponent on their table. I totally encourage you to go. Its a once in a lifetime experience. Its expensive, but it's worth it. oh, and pick darrel's brain - he's probably got other tips as well. |

Mario & Eric, First, I would really like to express my appreciation for your votes of confidence as well as your mentorship/technical advise. To be honest after reading your messages it really got me excited to play and also helped me to believe that I could represent well even though I have not played on many of the tables. Thank you. I will admit I logged on today to let you guys know that I have decided not to go to Italy. It is with ambivalence that I say this. My reasons are as follows: 1) Work is really busy and getting the time will be “interesting” to say the least. 2) cost 3) no one else from Canada is going so no doubles 4) short notice 5) the event is not in a major city. Non of these points by themselves are a deal breaker but summed together they push me in the direction of saying no to the event. What is the drop dead date for me to play in the event? I am assuming I must inform CTSA who will then inform ITSF? Also what are the chances/odds/procedure for getting someone to play doubles. If someone else was going I would do it. Is anyone out there interested? |

The next highest finishers are Eric D and Mario A tied at 33rd-48th. I believe when Taha and I previously communicated about if a player declined we would go to the next highest finisher. The mechanism voted on to break a tie was USTSA points. I think it would be great if we could have 2 men competing so that we could field a doubles team also. Doesn't look like we be able to field a womens team. |

The deadline we have to tell the ITSF who's going and what table they are playing on is Oct 15th. (this monday). So Matt and Mario.. are you going? If mario does not want to, i can make a quick decision on sunday / monday - and see if my wife and i can work something out with respect to our kids. So if Mario does not want to go, Matt - if I go, are you in for sure still? I dont want to go through all this trouble just to find out that you're not able to go. |

I'll be able to decide by Sunday, and we can let ITSF know by monday. If i am not able to go, is anyone else interested - who entered open singles, or the open singles qualifier? I quickly looked at the open singles chart, and saw that sean lee qualified for open singles.. anyone else? Eric, Simon? you guys were playing awesome that weekend. |

After looking into various options, it would of been way to much trouble for me and my kids, flying them to SK, or flying a grandparent out from SK. add that to all the added costs, and i've come to a decision i really dont want to make. I won't be going either. This does fuel me a bit for next year, so that we'll hopefully get TSAC off its collective ass (and all the promoters across canada) to run a national championship type series, where the winner will of won their trips to the ITSF World Championships. Cause not having someone representing Canada is the worst outcome out of all of this. That part is what gets to me the most. |
