Topic: World Cup Draw - who will Canada play?

Author: foosghost Original Message Posted: Nov 5 2008 6:27AM

Just cause it's fun to discuss, i've started:

Author: van_can_foos Reply #1 Posted: Nov 6 2008 7:38AM

Well here are the results:

Group A: USA, Slovakia, Slovenia, UAE
Group B: Belgium, Canada, Lithuania, Cameroon
Group C: France Luxembourg, India, Bulgaria
Group D: Czech Rep., Denmark, Norway, Ireland
Group E: Austria, Switzerland, Spain, South Africa
Group F: UK, Hungary, Romania, Russia
Group G: Italy, Japan, Poland, Argentina
Group H: Germany, Netherlands, China, Brazil

Now looking ahead at the elimination chart (assuming we finish in the top two in our group)

http://www.table-soccer.org/worldcup/results/2009/men/index.htm

If we finish first in our group we will play Group A’s second place team (any guesses?). If we qualify second in our group we will play the top-finishing team from Group A (guess who).

I know we don’t want to look too far ahead, but that wasn’t a good draw for us.

Regarding the lesser-known qualification opponents: there have been no ITSF-sanctioned tourneys in Cameroon, but Lithuania had a Pro tour event on Garlando tables this year.

I dont't see why we can't beat Belgium, its not like FC is going to be playing every match, can he? I hope Sofie Vigneron makes the belgium team, I would like to play her one on one...Either/or - USA is balanced all the way through and would be a tougher draw. UAE has one good player who is beatable.

I totally agree, that Belgium is beatable. FC can only play 1 singles game, and 1 doubles game. That's it.

They do have other good pro - pm level players though, so that's not a team we want to take lightly either.

But placing first in our group is the key to going a long way for us i think.

It's interesting knowing this far in advance who everyone is playing. Come the 15th we'll be able know exactly what tables we really need to work on and what players we need to scout.

I think you guys (besides Eric and/or whoever's been before) are going to be in for a bit of a rude awakening.

Yes, Belgium is beatable and besides them, I think we..err...you...umm..Canada have a darned good pool. But...Belgium isn't and won't be your toughest competition.

In my opinion, your toughest will be the US, Austria, Germany, UK, (I know some really good players from the Netherlands) and there might be a one or two others, maybe Italy. No particular order.

Don't forget a lot of areas have had access to not only Tornados, but the other tables as well and have learned how to adjust. Not just to those tables, but the simple act of adjusting in general. That was the biggest advantage we had over most the last time and I can guarantee you it will be much less of an advantage for you this time, as they will have caught up.

hehe..well you'll see.

Wish I was going...think I woulda made a pretty decent captain.

No they are not, but if we realistically want to get past the second round, then we need to beat belgium. Austria, Germany are definatley the top seeds with the US. I think Netherlands are beatable, as are UK - I have played most of their players. Always the bottom line is to play your best against everyone and never to underestimate.

>Always the bottom line is to play your best against everyone and never to underestimate.

Well duh, my dear friend, Jeffy.

The real key is matching up players. If the format is the same as previous (I haven't looked) then you will have to strategize well and knowing the skill level of the players on the teams you play against and creating the strongest team to put against them will obviously be what you wanna do.

Hmpf...I feel sooooo left out. Boooo hooooo!!

anyways

Moya!! leave my teammates alone. remember us men are purely driven by ego, and have no ability to deal with females showing doubt in our abilities to do manly things (like play foos). B-)

As soon as the entire team is assembled, I'm going to be preaching to the team for the next 2 months, hoping to let them know everything they need to be prepared they best they can be.

Interesting brackets though
if we finish 2nd in our pool, we'll likely have to go through:
US,
France,
Austria,
to get to finals

but if we take 1st in our pool likely matchups would be
Slovakia,
Czech Rep or Denmark,
then Germany

There's also a chance that the US might want 2nd to avoid the French and Austria - but that's not their style - so doubtfull.

I say we just pound everyone in our path, we can beat anyone.
