I found the following posted on the foosball.com forum. It is a competition to incorporate some technology into foosball. You can get $200 for writing about how you want to implement your technology, and then win another $750 and a Fireball table. Fireball tables are awesome, they are commonly used in Germany and are a top end table. It is the european table that plays closest to tornado. I thought maybe some of the other Edmonton guys might be interested in doing something (sam ben and tobin?)
Dear all,
XMOS and Fireball are delighted to announce the FoosTech Create Competition 2009. The challenge is to build an improvement or enhancement to a foosball table that incorporates XMOS technology.
The prize for the best entry is $750 and a brand new Fireball table.
The competition runs in two Phases (you can join in at the second Phase if you want). In Phase 1, you submit a brief description of your idea and your team for the chance to get up to $200 in financial support for your project. In Phase 2, you build your demonstration project. The deadline for Phase 1 is the end of July, Phase 2 in early October.
More information can be found at xmos.com/foostech.
The competition is open to absolutely everyone - and you can team up as you wish. The competition is even open to XMOS internal staff... so if you have a great idea but no technical knowledge, head on to the Xlinkers.org forums and ask for help - you might find a partner!
Best of luck,
Jonathan

Bottle holders that chill your beer.
Electronic ball cleaner. Instead of rolling the ball around in your hand and inspecting for lint/fuzz after the ball goes off the table, simply insert into the little slot and let the technologically advanced brushes take over. BTW they go really fast so it takes only a half second.
Velocity measure thingys...those laser ones like what they use to measure the speed of bullets. Obviously the ball won't go that fast (unless Roger is shooting his push), but I could see the sensors being installed flush on the inside walls of the playing surface.

Gyros to measure and signal jarring...not sure how you would tell which player did it.
|
|
Plus you could tune the gyros to "prison rules" that allow a more aggressive play or set it to "prima donna" for players like....well I'll let others finish this sentence if they want.

Holy shit I'm gonna be rich!

A mechanical hand that pops up and slaps you in the face when you let in garbage goals. This one could work concurrently with the aforementioned "prison rules" gyro setting. The only thing is you'd have a button to activate the slapper against your opponent.

Auto-leveling playing surface. Forget spinning those levelers on the bottom of the legs everytime the table is moved.
Bent bar straightener.

You should incorporate a paint ball gun for those people who refuse to shoot anything other than a back pin.
|
|
How about something that records your personal preferences in handle thickness, rod slickness, surface roll, ball weight, ball grippiness and then automatically adjusts the mechanics of the table to provide that for each player. Kind of a carry on of the aforementioned "prima-donna mode".
Failing that, what about handle warmers for those cold winter nights when the prima donnas come in off the street and want to play but don't want to get their pinkies chilled.
